Default

How Many Times Have You Heard The Word, “Default” Lately?

What does the word, “default” mean?  One of the definitions is to fail in fulfilling or satisfying an engagement, claim, or obligation.  We here in the United States have been hearing a lot lately about the possibility of our government defaulting.

It is no exaggeration that our country is facing some very serious decisions.  The problems we face are a result of many, many years of wrong decisions and failure to correct past mistakes.  Regardless of what decisions our lawmakers make now there are going to be consequences; their decisions will simply map out how severe and how long lasting.

I wrote an article back in April that I posted on this blog when fear of a government shutdown was looming.  Now, a little more than three months laterm it is once again crunch time for the politicians.

One Of The Biggest Problems?

There is no question that difficult times are inevitable.  But looking to our government to solve our problems is perhaps one of the biggest problems itself.

In that article from April, I wrote, “But our trust, our confidence, our absolute reliance must always be in our God.  Regardless of what politicians do, regardless of what the consequences of their decisions bring, none of it ever shuts down God.  There will never, ever be a shutdown of God’s love and power to help you.”

The Same Is True Today

God will not default on His promises to you.  Therefore our trust, our confidence, our reliance must be on our God and not on our government.  Yes, our country needs prayer; the Bible directs us to pray for our leaders.  But those who continue to put their trust in the government to solve all their problems are going to be disappointed.

In these treacherous days of uncertainty we should definitely be praying for our country and our leaders.  We should also being praying much for our own personal situations, looking to God for His help and guidance.

I still believe that our God is a personal God.  I believe that He can help each one of us personally and individually.  I believe that our loving God can reveal specific things to us that are just for us.  Do you?

Our God will never fail in fulfilling or satisfying His claims or obligations.  Our God will not default!

Who You Gonna Trust?

It’s Another Podcast!

It was never the intention of the Founding Fathers to guarantee happiness for everyone.  Being happy and taken care of is not anyone’s birthright.  The intent of the Founders was rather to allow each individual’s pursuit of their own happiness.

I posted an article a couple of weeks ago about this topic and I thought I would share some of that with you in this short podcast (6:53).

Should our trust be in our God, taking responsibility for our own lives, or, should we look to and expect our government to take care of us?

What Do You Expect?

compit-emailYou have probably received emails where the sender has a personal signature, maybe even complete with a quote of some kind.  I receive those from time to time.  There are a number of people who like to put a quote, phrase, or something similar to that under their name when they send out an email.

Some of those things are funny.  Others I have found inspiring.  But a couple of years ago my son told me about something he read on an email that he received.  What he read didn’t exactly inspire him.  And, even though it was probably intended to be funny, he didn’t see the humor in it at all!

statueThe line under the signature read, “Just accept it. Some days you’re a statue and other days you’re a pigeon.”  Wow!  How’s that for a mind picture?  Someone told me several months ago it is an expression that some New Yorkers use at times.

What’s Wrong With This Picture?

First of all, my son didn’t like the “accept it” part of the quote and I don’t blame him. I don’t believe that life is determined by fate. We do not just have to accept whatever happens to us.  We have the freedom of will to take charge of our own lives.

Secondly, my son took issue with being a pigeon.  He told me that he thought that the quote was basically saying that some days you have to be a statue and have crap dumped on you, but other days, you get to be a pigeon and dump crap on others.

I’m glad he had the maturity not to just laugh it off as another “funny” example about what to expect in life.  It is sad, but there are lots of people who have this kind of attitude about life in one form or another.  They get up each day with thoughts like, “Well, let’s see what today brings.”

Do You Really Want To Live That Way?

Now that’s an interesting outlook on life isn’t it?  Get up in the morning and yawn, and say, “Gee, I wonder if I’m going to be statue today, or a pigeon?  Oh well, whatever happens, I’m just going to accept it.”

Very few people realize that what you consistently accept is what you will consistently expect, and that is what you will consistently receive.

So who ever said that we just have to “accept” everything that comes our way?  No matter what situation or circumstance you are in today, you don’t have to accept the way things are in your life.  You can choose by your own freedom of will to change your life. You really can choose to have confidence in God.  It all starts with your thoughts.

What If Things Are Lousy Right Now?

42-15530351If lousy things are happening in your life right now, and you are dealing with unpleasant situations, and you feel just like a bombarded statue, the first thing I recommend is stop dwelling on all those things.  Stop talking about that mess.  Stop focusing on that. I didn’t say to pretend it doesn’t exist; just don’t accept it as the ways things have to be in your life.

Instead, use your God-given free will to think and focus on exactly what you desire for your life.  Find a helpful method to keep your mind attuned to your desires and goals, so that you can keep those thoughts in the forefront of your mind.

Some people like to write down their goals and read them throughout the day. Others carry written affirmations with them to read during the day.  There are those who review their goals and dreams before they go to sleep and especially when they wake up in the morning.  Personally, I like to review those kinds of things early in the morning while praying and talking to God.

Do You Really Need A Method?

So few realize what is most important is what you are consistently thinking.  The write-itdominant thoughts that you carry build your own personal belief system.  The things that you attract into your life are based on your own personal belief system.

Think about it logically.  If we are supposed to “accept whatever happens,” then why did God give each and every one of us free will to choose to think whatever thoughts we want to think?  And, why did He promise to answer prayers and give you the desires of your heart?

Accepting whatever life throws at you is certainly not living life with confidence and joy.   However, it doesn’t have to be the way you go through your life. You do have a choice.  Each morning you can choose the thoughts you will carry for that day, and continue to build a positive and successful belief system.

Where Is Your Life Going This Year?

Many people have expectations and anticipations of this being a good year.  calendar-6-7Most of the people that I’ve talked to have packed ’09 away and are looking forward to 2010.  I know I am one who has great expectations and anticipations for this New Year.  How about you?

If you want to see your life grow and expand this year, then I have a little exercise for you to try.  It’s simple but it can change the course of your life.

Is your life all that you desire it to be right now?  Where do you want your life to go?  One of the biggest things that will hinder you from reaching your goals and dreams is to focus on your current situation. Part of having confidence in God is managing your own thoughts.

It Is What It Is

Have you ever stopped to consider that your current situation right now in your life is simply your current situation? And most people will think, act, react, and respond because of how they see themselves right now.

chioticSome who desire to bring their life to a new and better level many times simply go in circles never making any progress. One of the biggest problems is that they spend too much time and energy wondering why they are in their current state. Have you ever felt like that?  I think we all have at times.

People analyze everything around them and try to come up with valid reasons as to why things are not going the way that they really desire them to.  As they continue in this process, they blame other people and other things for their lack of success.

Others come to the conclusion that it is all just, “meant to be.”  Or, “there must be a reason for why things are the way they are.”  Some even blame God by saying, “He must have a purpose for all this.”

Are You Wasting Your Time?

Spending time and focusing on your current situation will never get you to where you want your life to be.  It is a waste of your precious time and energy!  Instead of asking yourself, “Why am I in this situation?” ask yourself, “What do I really desire?”

When you begin to shift your energy from where you are to where you desire to be, then things start to happen.  Why?  Because your brain will put its attention on what you tell it is important.  It is the way the Creator designed our grey matter to work!

Have you ever been on your computer and clicked to open your word processing program?  If your computer is working properly, then that program would open.  Our brains act in a similar fashion.

That’s why when all your time and energy is spent on your present situation, your brain will work hard to reinforce and keep your situation in tact, without change!  If your word processing program is open on the computer, but you really want to open your music program, then that is not going to happen until you open that program!  As long as you continue working on the word processing program, all the wishing and wanting the music program does not get it up on the screen!

And, sadly, too often, people just sit and feel sorry for themselves.  They do not like where their lives are right now, but that is all they think about and talk about.  All that does is reinforce to the computer in their head that this is where they must stay.

Here’s A Little Exercise

I want to challenge you.  Make a conscious effort to stop dwelling on your current situation and circumstances.  I didn’t say ignore your responsibilities.  I didn’t say bury your head in the sand and pretend that there are no problems.  What I mean is, stop putting all your focus, your mental energy, your thinking, and your speech on your current situation today.
planner
Instead, for the next three weeks, make a very concerted effort to put a lot of focus and attention on what you desire for your life.  Refuse to entertain any negative thoughts of where you are today.  Delete them just like you delete a “pop-up” on the computer!

Picture in your mind your ideal life in every detail.  Write it down on paper.  Read it; say it aloud; pray about it; think about all through the day.  Do whatever works for you to keep your mental focus and energy on what you desire for your life.  All throughout the day refuse to speak any negatives concerning your current situation. Instead, speak about your desires and what you fully expect for your life.

And when you pray, remind yourself that God has promised that He would give you the desires of your heart.  Ask Him to show you how you can get there.  Have confidence in Him, because He has promised it to you.

If you will do this diligently for three weeks, you will have initiated a major change of focus in your mind.  You will begin to believe that you can have your dreams and desires.  And as you continue to keep your focus on those dreams and desires, you are going to start seeing God open doors for you and finding opportunities made available to you.

And perhaps the most rewarding part of this exercise is that you will be aware that you are no longer just accepting your life the way it is.  You will become more aware that your desires and dreams can truly become a reality in your life.

Happy Thanksgiving!

cornacopiaTomorrow is Thanksgiving Day here in the USA. So, I first wanted to extend very warm wishes to you and your family for a wonderful Thanksgiving weekend.

I also wanted to tell you about something I did many years ago that relates to being thankful.  It is about developing an attitude of gratitude.  It is a very simple method that I used years ago.

Now of course it is only a method, and as you and I know, some methods work for some people and not others.  So if it works for you, then that’s great.  If you have another method, then please leave it in the comments below.

Turkey Day

I thought about sharing this on the blog at this time of year because as I was thinking about Thanksgiving the other day, I thought about what a busy day it usually turns out to be.  In so many cases it is a day filled with activities, like watching the parade, playing games, watching football, and, of course, enjoying a small feast.  In fact, some even refer to it as “Turkey Day.”

There’s certainly nothing wrong with all the activities and festivities on turkeyThanksgiving Day.  I am planning on having a fun filled celebration with my children, their spouses, and other friends. Thanksgiving Day is not really a “day of thanksgiving,” but rather, it is more of a day of celebration.

But many will stop and give pause to thank God for all His blessings.  Some will pray before the big meal.  Others will join together in prayers of thanks sometime during the day.  Many will remember to give thanks in their own way.

A Method

Years ago, I heard of a little method to help develop more gratitude in my life.  I realized that there is more to being grateful than just saying, “Thanks.”  I wanted to have a real, deep and genuine heart of gratitude for God.  So I heard about this little method and decided to try it out.  I didn’t realize at the time that there is a fantastic side benefit from doing this.

The exercise is very simple.  At the end of each day, before you go to sleep, write down some things that happened during the day that you are thankful for. Then in the morning, read what you wrote the night before.  Sounds simple, right?

But when I first started, it was a bit of a challenge.  I sat there on the edge of the bed with my pen in hand, and my notebook on my lap and thought, “Okay, what happened today that I am really grateful for?”  I drew a blank.  I couldn’t remember anything that really stood out in my mind.

notepad-and-penWell, I needed to write something.  I mean, I couldn’t just go to sleep thinking that I wasn’t thankful for anything that happened to me during the day.  So, I began writing a couple of general things, like that I had food to eat, and that I was healthy.  Well, at least it was a start.

Then, the first thing in the morning, you take a look at what you wrote the night before.  In other words, you are starting your day reminding yourself of what you were thankful for the night before.  And here is where the side benefit starts to come into play.

A Side Benefit

Night after night I wrote in my notebook.  Morning after morning I read what I wrote the night before.  And the longer I continued to do this, the more of an attitude of gratitude I began to develop.  I became more and more aware of God’s blessings in my life, and I became more consistent in thanking Him.

My focus began to shift from what I didn’t have to what I was receiving.  Well, as he thinks in his heart, so is he.  The result, the side benefit was that the blessings began to increase.  Throughout the day I began to look for His blessings.  In doing so, I began to expect more of His blessings.  The result was that more and more of His blessings came into my life.

It was so refreshing to me to know that I was indeed remembering more of what He was doing for me, and thanking Him for it.  The Bible says to not forget all His benefits because there is no way that we can remember them all. I discovered this great truth also.

Forgotten Blessings

On the first day of the month, I would take some time to sit down and read everything that I had written for the previous month.  I was startled and surprised when I read some of my entries.  I had actually forgotten a couple happy-face-writingof things, and reading what I had written was a pleasant reminder. There were others that I read that just brought a big smile to my face.

This of course was magnified when I added one more step to this method.  I decided on New Year’s Day to take some time and read everything that I had written for the entire year. I can’t tell you how exciting that was!  There were things that I wrote that I had completely forgotten about.  And being reminded of a year of some of God’s blessings in my life was humbling as well as inspiring.

I was reminded first firsthand of so many things that God had done for me during the past year. My attitude of genuine gratitude to God was deepening.  And, my confidence in God to supply what I needed was growing.

I enjoyed doing this so much that I continued doing it for a number of years. I still have many of those notebooks in my desk.  Every once in awhile I take one out and just read.  It is so inspiring.

Want To Try It?

Try it yourself for a while.  You’ll discover that you have more to be thankful for than you realize. You will really begin to see how God is indeed involved in your life every single day.

As you continue doing this you will be looking throughout the day for His blessings in your life.  You will actually be expecting those blessings.  A very big part of having confidence and believing God is expecting Him to bring His promises to pass for you.

At night and in the morning you will be consciously taking time to give God the thanks, appreciation and gratitude that He deserves.  And, it will really be a great blessing to you on the first day of the month to read all the entries from the last month.

praying-pilgrimSo, even though tomorrow is traditionally Thanksgiving Day, we can and we ought to give Him thanks each and every day.

What’s Your Fate?

I don’t like the word, “fate.”  Maybe it’s because for a long time now I have not been one to just settle for the way things are today, with no hope for better days ahead. With so many promises in the Bible of help, deliverance, healing, and, prosperity, no one needs to just settle.

dictionaryThe dictionary defines the word “fate” as, “The supposed force, principle, or power that predetermines events,” and, “the inevitable events predestined by this force.” It also says, “An event (or a course of events) that will inevitably happen in the future: the ultimate agency that predetermines the course of events.”

You have probably heard a number of phrases that talk about fate, like, “Don’t tempt fate,” or, “That was a twist of fate,” or, “She deserves a better fate,” or, “That will certainly seal his fate.”  In Greek mythology, “The Fates” were three goddesses who controlled human destiny! What? No thank you!

Fate is also described and referred to in other ways, like, “Well that was just meant to be“, meaning that it was going to happen, and that it was supposed to happen, and so that’s why it happened.  If you follow that logic you end up with the conclusion that whatever happens was meant to happen.  But doesn’t that take away all personal responsibility for your actions?  Yes it does, and that’s the point.

Let’s See How This Works

sandwichSuppose I decide to have a sandwich for lunch. Is that fate?  Was it meant to be? As I eat that sandwich, am I to think that eating this sandwich right now is what was supposed to have happened?  Some would say, “Yes.”

But what if I took the bread out to make the sandwich, andsalad then stopped and said, “Wait a minute – I think I’ll have a salad instead.”  But the bread is already out and sitting there! Wasn’t I meant to have a sandwich?

Which one was meant to be, the sandwich or the salad?  There are some who would say that I was meant to get the bread out first, and then I was meant to change and go with the salad.  For those who think like that, everything is just meant to be.

The problem with that kind of thinking and rationale is that it eliminates free will.  It also eliminates any and all responsibility for your actions.  And that’s just the tip of the iceberg.

What Cards Have You Been Dealt?

No one is destined to be successful or destined to be a failure.  Far too many people accept that their lives are dictated by fate.  They say things like, “This is my lot in life; these are the cards that I’ve been dealt; I’m just a victim of circumstances and fate; this is all I can really expect in life.”  To all of that I say, “No, no, no!”

How can a child of the Creator of the universe go through life accepting things as they are, thinking that he cannot change them and just accepting that this is the way things are supposed to be?

Are We All Just Robots?

Have you ever considered that if your “fate is sealed,” you have no free will? If you have no free will then it really doesn’t matter what you do, good or bad, because it is not your fault.  It’s what was supposed to have happened.

The Creator gave each and every one of us free will to choose.  Each one of us can decide what we want to believe and what we want to do.  And, with God’s help, there’s really no limit to what we can accomplish.

If anything is really “meant to be,” it is that God wants us successful and blessed with the life that we have to live. He has lovingly provided all that we need.   But, he also gave us free will to choose.

What Will You Choose?

You can choose to accept “fate,” or, you can choose to accept the promises in the Bible as true and choose to believe them.

You are in life today where you are because of what you have believed and accepted as true.  You can change your circumstances by changing your thinking.  You can choose to focus on the things that you do desire instead of settling for the way things are now.

The only other choice is to accept fate.  And, if you choose to accept fate, well then, “good luck.” You’ll need it!

Opposite Thoughts

You’ve probably heard the question, “What are you thinking about?”  But have you ever wondered how many thoughts you actually think?  Scientific research varies on estimtes from 12,000 to 50,000 thoughts per day.  But, there is something that you cannot think about!

In this article I am going to show you just how magnificent the human mind is by asking you to do something with your mind that you cannot do. I’ve tried it and I can’t do it.  In fact there is no one on the planet that can do it.

I’ll explain more in a few minutes.

What you focus on in your mind will always set the course for your life, whether it is positive or negative, success or failure, victory or defeat.  Amazingly, few people know and understand this and even fewer believe it.  Believe it or don’t believe it; the battle will always take place in the mind.

Thoughts Are Seeds

I like to think of thoughts as seeds.  Seeds have a planting and germinating process. If they are planted and nourished, they will grow and produce. This is true with weed seeds too.

Just because a negative thought comes into your mind doesn’t mean you need to harbor that thought and entertain it.  You can simply dismiss it, like pulling a weed out. Or, you can choose to keep it and let it settle in.

Now, consider opposites.  How do you get rid of darkness?  Simply by introducing light.  Light and darkness are opposites. The same is true with cold and heat.  Hot and cold are opposites, just as light and darkness are opposites.   One replaces or neutralizes the other.

Try This Experiment

Now when it comes to our thinking and our thoughts, we just cannot think two opposite thoughts at the same time.  Have you ever tried?  If not, here’s an experiment you can do right now.

tall-buildingPicture a building in your mind.  Make this building a very, very tall building and, at the same time, make this building a very short building.  You can’t do it!

You cannot picture the same building as a very tall building and a very short building at the same time.  That’s because tall and short are opposites.

Want to try another?

Picture a car at a racetrack going one-hundred and fifty miles an hour and at the same time see the car going twenty miles and hour.  You cannot picture it because fast and slow are opposites.42-15599538

You cannot hold two opposite thoughts in your mind at the same time. One will simply overwrite the other.  That is how the Creator designed our brains to work.

This Gives Us A Great Advantage!

The thoughts that you hold in your mind are the thoughts that you are planting and nourishing, and they will grow.  The question is, “What kind of crop do you want to harvest?”

Get busy planting and nourishing the seeds that you want to harvest. If a farmer wants to harvest wheat and corn, does he just sit around all day and do nothing, and then hope that maybe someday he could harvest some wheat and corn?  No.  He plants seeds and nourishes them.

972948What kind of seeds does he plant?  Wheat and corn, of course!  It’s so simple and so very obvious in so many categories of life.  And, it works just as accurately and precisely in our minds.

You must decide what you truly desire, and then start planting and nourishing the seed. When those destructive, negative, defeating thoughts pop in, drive them out, by replacing them with what you do desire.

It’s Your Choice

Your thoughts will truly bring to you courage or discouragement; success or failure; confidence or fear.  It is always in your own power to choose which thoughts you will hold in your mind. Changing your thinking is absolutely required if you want to change your circumstances.

God gave us all free will.  You can choose to think whatever thoughts you want to think.  But remember, you are and you will be a product of the thoughts that you have planted and nourished.  The Bible says, “As he thinks in his heart so is he.”

Stop Making Excuses!

One of the dictionary definitions of an excuse is, “An explanation offered as a reason for release from an obligation or promise.  Some explanations are regarded as “good excuses,” while others are looked upon as “poor excuses.”  Either way, they both give explanations or reasons why.

“I forgot” is perhaps the most popular and even thought by some to be the worst excuse of all time.  Next in line comes, “I changed my mind.”

On the other hand, if you were snowed in for two days due to a blizzard, that would rank pretty high as a “good excuse” for not making it in to work, right?

What About Other Excuses?

But what about excuses people have concerning their goals and their dreams?   What about places you’d like to go in life, things you want to do, things you’d like to accomplish, but somewhere along the line you came up with some good explanations of why you can’t have those things? Are they really “good excuses?”

Suppose you had dreams and aspirations of running a marathon, climbing a mountain, or even jumping out of a plane?  Those are really exciting goals and dreams, but what if you were blind?  Being blind would be a pretty “good excuse,” wouldn’t it?

Have you ever heard of Erik Weihenmayer?  He went blind at age 13.  Erik has run in marathons, jumped out of planes, and climbed mountains, including Mt. Everest!  Here’s quote from Erik:

“When I went blind, it was tough to even find the bathroom.  Now that I’ve climbed Mount Everest, well, I guess I’ve come a long way.”

mt-everest

On May 25, 2001, Erik Weihenmayer became the first blind man in history to reach the summit of the world’s highest peak – Mount Everest. And on September 5, 2002, when he stood on top of Mt. Kosciusko in Australia, Erik had completed his 7-year goal to climb The Seven Summits – the highest mountains on each of the seven continents.

I read that only 100 mountaineers have ever accomplished that feat. Erik did it at the age 33, one of the youngest climbers to accomplish that feat!   You can read Erik’s book, called, Touch the Top of the World.

What About Your Dreams And Goals?

So, are your dreams, goals and desires too big?  I don’t think so.

There’s a promise in the Bible that God will give you the desires of your heart.  What are your desires?  God will give them to you!  Now, that doesn’t mean that you will just wake up some morning at the top of Mt. Everest, and wonder how you got there!

road-rainbowBut, in pursuing your desires and goals, God can help you. He can show you, lead you, direct you, and give you the desires of your heart.

So don’t be afraid to have big goals, and big dreams!  Ask God for help and direction and then start pursuing!

Is there someone you can talk to?  Do you need further education or training?  Are there places you need to go to see and learn?

In other words, start taking whatever action you can right now, today!  And continue to pursue after it day after day, refusing to quit.

It Really Is Your Choice

You can choose to consistently pursue after you goals or you can choose to just sit back and go through all the “good excuses” of why those goals just won’t happen for you.

It’s been said many times that the greatest reward is not in reaching your goal, but who you become along the way in reaching your goal.  Erik now gets to talk to thousands of people about what it’s like to work and reach your goals.

I read that when he was climbing Mt. Everest, that just minutes from being on the top of the world, Erik started to cry – but those tears were freezing on his face, so he had to stop crying for a few more minutes until he was indeed standing on the top of the world!

Your dreams and your desires are important because they are yours!  God wants to help you and give you the desires of your heart.

Stop making excuses and start pursuing your dreams!
