How To Avoid Disappointment

We all experience disappointments from time to time. People, circumstances, situations, and sometimes even the weather disappoint us.  But let me give you an absolutely fool proof method that will ensure you will experience a lot of disappointment.

I promise you, the more you follow this method the more you will be disappointed.  It’s so simple that many people do it without realizing the end result.  I define it in three words: wait on people.

If you are waiting for someone to do something nice for you, you’re going to be disappointed.  If you are waiting for someone to be your friend, you’re going to be disappointed.  If you are waiting on others to pat you on the back to make your day complete and make you feel appreciated and admired, you will be disappointed.

There Is Another Choice

But instead of waiting, there’s another course you can take: you can realize that you have a lot to give and offer to others.  You have talents and abilities unique to you that enable you to reach out to others.  Since waiting on others leads to disappointment, then reaching out to others, to make their day, is fulfilling and rewarding for you.

I’m not saying that we shouldn’t anticipate, expect and look forward to good things coming our way.  We should!  But just waiting for people to pat us on the back and just waiting for good things to make us happy will leave us very disappointed.

Yes, of course, we need encouragement to help us handle life’s challenges. But at those times when you feel like waiting for encouragement, why not reach out to someone and encourage them? The impact to them could be life changing, and the affects on your life, for your loving and giving act, are immeasurable.

Giving Is Powerful!

Giving is a very powerful thing.  The Bible says, “give and it shall be given unto you.”  Jesus said that it is more blessed to give than to receive.  The Apostle Paul wrote that God loves a cheerful giver.

Have you noticed that those who are really givers seem to be happy and blessed, while those who are waiting for someone to do something for them often seem miserable?  Some might say they are miserable because they have a lot of lack.  I would say they have a lot of lack because they are miserable and disappointed.

There are those who give financially from their increase.  If you do, make sure you give it as the Bible directs, not grudgingly or of necessity.  Give of your finances with a pure heart, knowing you are reaching out and helping someone, and knowing that God will bless your gift back to you many times over.

Financial giving is just one of many ways we can give.  There have been people in my life who have never given me anything of monetary value, and yet what they did give me was priceless because it really helped me.  A smile, kind words, encouragement and wisdom are beneficial and helpful, though intangible, gifts.

Some people, because of their current situation and circumstances, feel they have nothing to give. But they firmly attest when their “ship comes in,” when things get better, then they will really give to others.  Once again, they are waiting and not giving.

A mindset of waiting for someone to do something for you not only breeds disappointment, but it also instills dependency, which in the least common denominator is slavery, not freedom.

You Have A Choice

No matter what condition or situation you are in, you can always give something.  You can smile, offer kind words, compliment, believe in someone, impart knowledge and wisdom.

Today a lot of people are waiting.  Some are waiting for a better opportunity, while others are waiting on people, events, and even the government to do something. Those who choose to wait will continue to be disappointed.

Regardless of where your life is right now, give to someone today, tomorrow, and the next day, knowing that it will bless them, be fulfilling to you, and cause you to avoid a lot of disappointment.  And remember God promised to bless you back for your giving.

  1. This post really blessed me to read this morning because I felt like I have waited for things before but really I just needed to give of myself. also I read your “My Story” yesterday and it was humbling to see what you have been through in your life and still you are diligently serving the Word. Thanks for your encouragement and giving in the body of Christ.

    • Thanks for your kind comments, Spencer. I very glad this article blessed you. Giving really is powerful. Have a great weekend, and God bless you.

  2. Thank you so much. This makes perfect sense. I spent 5 minutes praying in silence this morning. I have been going through some things lately and have been feeling very sad and tearful. I’ve lost someone very special to me due to COPD. After I finished praying, I went on with my morning and God placed a message in my heart and mind. It came profoundly…and kept playing in my mind over and over…”It is better to give than receive.” I’ve never received a message from God before in this way. But it prompted me to google it, and I happened upon this article you’ve written. Mike, thank you so much for writing this. It’s opened my eyes to a lot of things, and the way I’ve been going about life in the wrong, misguided way. It seems so simple now that I’m reading it layed out like this. Have a blessed season.
