Highlights

This past weekend I was in Charlotte, North Carolina for a business convention.  Our guest speaker was none other than Andy Andrews.

Having recently done his seven decisions as podcasts on this blog, I thought I would do a short (6:33) podcast of some of the highlights.

What Are Your Limits?

st-pattyHappy St Patrick’s Day!  Saint Patrick is of course the most commonly recognized of the patron saints of Ireland. It began as a purely Catholic holiday and became an official feast day in the early 1600s. However, as you and I know, it has gradually become more of a secular celebration of Ireland’s culture.  So whether you are Irish or not, enjoy the day!

What Are Your Limits?

How much potential do we really have?  Is there a point in life when we can just say, “I’ve reached my limits, that’s all I can do?”  Or, can we continue to grow?

Did you hear about Marion Jacobson? She published her second children’s book a couple of years ago.  So, what’s so unusual about that?  Plenty of people write books.  But, on the other hand there are lots of people who want to write a book, but never do. Marion finished her second book at the tender age of 95.

Verne_Oliver___Headshot1Then there’s Verne Oliver.  She joined the Gilder Foundation as its associate director, using its grants to create or renovate more than 100 elementary school media centers across New York City. She was very involved in putting the finishing touches on two school libraries.  Oh, and by the way, Verne joined the Gilder Foundation when she retired in 1987 and at age 85.

Lot’s of people saw Lillian Cox, of Tallahassee, Florida on TV. She lillian-coxmust really have places to go and people to see.  Perhaps that’s why a couple of years ago she renewed her drivers license when she was 101.

Are You Really Too Old?

There are dozens and dozens of stories like these.  And I’m not saying that you should write a book or drive a car at age 100.  Although I know there are people who would say that at that age you are too old.   And while Marion may not make the best sellers list, and Lillian will never drive at the Indy 500, they decided to live life to the fullest!

As long as you are alive there are things that you can learn and things you can do!  You can learn and grow; you can reach out, discover, and expand your life!  When the famous architect, Frank Lloyd Wright was asked near the end of his career which of his buildings was his favorite, he replied, “My next one!”

On the other hand, many people have just stopped living and are doing little more than existing.  They have become complacent and are just settling for the way life is.  They lack excitement and enthusiasm for life.

Far too many people have stopped hoping and dreaming.  Although that is what they have chosen to do, it doesn’t mean that they have run out of potential.

What Do You Believe About You?

A lot of people today really believe that their best days are behind them.  That is what they choose to believe.  But why not expect that your best days are in front of you?  Thinking that way is also a choice.  God gave us free will to think whichever way we choose to think.  The startling reality is that we will reap the results of those choices.

One of the reasons people have chosen to stop dreaming is because of past failures or disappointments.  Because of what happened in the past, they are afraid of doing or trying anything new.  They just play it safe, stay comfortable and settle.

The truth is that many, many successful people have had many, many disappointments.  But they refused to carry a failure mind set.  They just continued to reach forth to another new endeavor.  It’s a good thing Abraham Lincoln didn’t stop living life after a disappointment or two, or three, or four!

Many people pray to God and ask for open doors.  But seldom do they get up and grab the doorknob to see if it opens!  And, if they do, and it doesn’t open, so many times then they give up.

Don’t Give Up!  Try Another Door!

If you are reading this article then your life is not over!  There are things to discover; there are things to learn. What are you waiting for?

The only valid limits that you have in your life are the ones that you have accepted.

george-dawsonJust ask George Dawson who had his book published at age 101 titled, “Life is So Good.”  Before he wrote his book, George decided he’d better learn to read first, so he took an adult literacy class when he was 98 years old!  And, yes, he finally got his GED at the age of 103.

Make Something Happen

Life Is So Good by George Dawson

Do Things Really Happen for A Reason?

Have you heard the phrase, “Everything happens for a reason?”  I have.  Sometimes people say, “That was just meant to be.”  But is that really true?

Does everything really happen for a reason?  I would answer that question both yes and no.  I answer, “No” to those who mean that no matter what happens, God has a reason for either allowing it to happen, or, as some believe, making it happen.

I answer, “Yes” because there is a cause and effect.  The result is the effect, and the reason it happened is the cause.  Let me give you an example.

Let’s Go For A Drive

Almost every driver knows that for their car engine to operate properly it car-2needs to have the proper amount of oil.  If it runs out of oil, it will ruin the engine.  So, if someone’s engine gets ruined for a lack of oil, was that just meant to be?  Don’t things happen for a reason?  Yes, and in this case, the reason was a lack of oil.

Hopefully, for that example, most will agree.  But let’s try another example.  I’ll stay with the automobile for this next example too.

Suppose you have a flat tire. Was it just meant to be?  Everything happens for a reason.  But, what if someone stops to help you with your flat tire and over the course of the changing of the tire, you say something to that person that really helps them?

Now there are some who will argue that the flat tire happened for a reason.  They actually believe that God had a hand in it.  Why?  Because He wanted you to be at a precise location at a precise time so that you could say something to someone that would really help them.

What About Free Will?

To some people this sounds like a very godly and spiritual event.  I disagree. With that kind of thinking, we have driven off the road and are now trying to drive in a lagoon.  It’s a sinking theory, because it negates the free will that God gave us.

Suppose that you were so upset or distracted with the flat tire that you didn’t flat-tirespeak anything to the person helping you, other than, “Thanks for the help.”  Did this event still happen for a reason?  Did God really have a hand in it?  Some people will argue, “Well God knows if you are going to speak to the person or not.

Now I know this debate has been around for a long time.  And I am certainly not going to try to present a thesis on it in this short article.  But regardless of what opinion you have on the subject, ask yourself this question:  If God knows what I am going to do, and what I am going to say, then do I really have any choice in the matter?

If that is true, then indeed, everything is meant to be.  And perhaps that’s the reason why everything happens; it is all just meant to be.  But that leaves the door wide open for lots of unaccountability.  “There must be a reason why I robbed the store; I guess it was just meant to be!”

God Is At Work

Don’t get me wrong, I really do believe that God can and does get involved in the affairs of mankind.  I also believe that His thoughts and His ways are far beyond the thinking of mortal human beings.  I have seen God work in my life in remarkable ways.  I am sure you have too.

I also know that God works in individuals on a personal level.  His guiding is there.  There are times that you just know you should do something, and other times that you shouldn’t.

Those who excel at this are those who, wherever they are and whatever they are doing, have a habit of asking God if there is something that they should or could do.  I do understand that and I try to live that way.

But I just think we need to be careful about what we blame God for. The word “blame” may sound a bit harsh, but think about it.  It’s all too easy to say, “That flat tire happened for a reason,” all the while thinking that it was God Who made your tire flat for a reason.  If you are speaking on God’s behalf, you ought to be really certain that you are accurate!

We cannot just throw away the free will that God gave to us.  In all of life we have choices.  We can choose to be negative or we can choose to be positive.  We can choose to help people or we can choose to ignore them.  And we can choose to ask God if there is something special that He would have us do or say.

So, yes, everything does happen for a reason.

If I Were Any Better, I’d Be Twins

It’s Another Podcast!

A number of years ago when I produced “Mike’s Pep Talks,” I did a one called, “If I Were Any Better, I’d Be Twins.”  It is currently on the series for “Self Employed Christians,” in two parts.

Since the material is very relevant for the days we are living in, I thought it would be profitable to re-do it here on the blog, and add some other insight.

Once you listen to it, you’ll know why I picked up the habit of often saying, “If I were any better, I’d be twins.”  Find out in this short podcast (9:13) what Jerry did when faced with a very serious situation.
