THE GREATNESS OF GOD

Our Brains Cannot Conceive The Greatness Of God

earthMost people have heard the first verse of the Bible: “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.”

Our earth is enormous, nearly 25,000 miles in equatorial circumference. The resources on this planet are vast. Plants and vegetation, along with fish and animals all abound in variety. Not to mention the billions of human beings all over this world.

But how do you even begin to compare the earth with the heavens? How big are the heavens? God created the HEAVENS, and also this little thing over here called Earth.

How Big And How Far?

Okay, so from our point of view Earth seems huge. But the approximate distance from Earth to the moon is around 239,000 miles. But they estimate the sun is around 93 million miles away from us! Oh, but wait!

The estimated distance from the sun to Pluto is around 3.7 billion miles. If you were to drive that distance, at 60 miles per hour, they say it would take you around 7,000 years!

Wow! Earth is not looking so huge is it it?

These estimates are just inside our solar system, which is only a small part of the Milky Way Galaxy. How many other solar systems are in our galaxy?  They think in the Milky Way Galaxy there are between 200 and 400 billion stars!

And just how many other galaxies are there? Billions! Earth doesn’t seem to be all that big now, does it?

Here’s The Point: God Created It All!

My point is, God created it all, including this little place we call earth. When we consider the vastness of the heavens, it gives us a little hint as to just how great our God really is.

If all God created was Earth, that would be beyond astounding, beyond what our brains could even conceive. But considering He created all the universe is rather mind blowing, to say the least! Perhaps a little more reverence and recognition might be in order?

Today, in our modern world we have made great advancements, and we are proud of what we have accomplished. In technology alone with electronics and computers we are doing things only hinted at previously in science fiction novels. Meanwhile, with advances in machinery, robotics, physics, medicine and biology, and in so many other areas in the last fifty years, it is all truly amazing.

Don’t Pat Yourself On The Back Too Hard

Yet, all we collectively know and accomplished really pales in comparison to what the Creator, God Almighty, has accomplished. The Bible says, “For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways, and My thoughts than your thoughts.”

Considering just how great and awesome our God is gives us confidence that there is no situation we face that could ever possibly be too big for Him to help us.

Recognizing how loving and kind He has been to mankind over the centuries, including extending an invitation for eternal life to everyone, it encourages us to love Him. It really ought to give us pause on a regular basis to praise Him and thank Him.

The very first verse of the Bible really is quite amazing and remarkable, isn’t it?  So the next time you are looking up into a starry night sky, you just might be inclined to break into a chorus of the old hymn, “How Great Thou Art.” That hymn has quite a history.

And, remember, God has also promised after His Son Jesus Christ returns, there is a day coming when God will bring to pass “a new heaven and a new earth!” Oh, wow!

How Great Thou Art
Lord my God! When I in awesome wonder
Consider all the works thy hand hath made,
I see the stars, I hear the mighty thunder,
Thy power throughout the universe displayed;
Refrain:
Then sings my soul, my Saviour God, to Thee,
How great Thou art, how great Thou art!
Then sings my soul, my Saviour God, to Thee,
How great Thou art, how great Thou art!
When through the woods and forest glades I wander
and hear the birds sing sweetly in the trees;
when I look down from lofty mountain grandeur,
and hear the brook, and feel he gentle breeze;
Refrain
Then sings my soul, my Saviour God, to Thee,
How great Thou art, how great Thou art!
Then sings my soul, my Saviour God, to Thee,
How great Thou art, how great Thou art!
And when I think that God his son not sparing,
Sent him to die – I scarce can take it in,
That on the cross my burden gladly bearing,
He bled and died to take away my sin:
Refrain
Then sings my soul, my Saviour God, to Thee,
How great Thou art, how great Thou art!
Then sings my soul, my Saviour God, to Thee,
How great Thou art, how great Thou art!
When Christ shall come with shout of acclamation
And take me home- what joy shall fill my heart!
Then I shall bow in humble adoration
And there proclaim, my God, how great thou art!
Refrain:
Then sings my soul, my Saviour God, to Thee,
How great Thou art, how great Thou art!
Then sings my soul, my Saviour God, to Thee,
How great Thou art, how great Thou art!

    • Thanks for the comment, Ronnie. I saw a T-shirt once that said, “I believe in the big bang theory – God said it, and BANG it happened.
      God bless you.

  2. amen…(while I am thinking of it once someone told me that did not mean “so be it” if not then what does it mean?) I figured you could answer that and for the sake of anyone else who does not know and is reading this Mike.

    • Loren, my understanding is that it does mean, “so be it.” Some English translations of the word, “amen” include “verily” and “truly.” It is mainly a declaration of affirmation. God bless you.
