Last Sunday, Kathy and I were on the Gulf Coast, in Pensacola Florida; it brought back a lot of memories. Recently married we moved near to Pensacola in late 1971. It was our first time back since moving away in 1973.

I was there to perform a wedding. Being in the area we lived as a newlyweds years ago brought up lots of memories of our early married days. Money was scarce then, but love was abundant.

Technology has certainly changed since then. The total sum of our electronic devices? A small black and white TV, a reel to reel stereo, a small clock radio, and a home phone. That’s it!

Today we celebrate our 44th anniversary! And while now we have a big screen TV and cell phones, our love for each other is still abundant. And, yes, I still carry a picture of her in my wallet from when she was 18.

3 Great Assets

A month ago, I was doing some long distance pre marriage counseling with the Florida couple I just married. It was our third session over the phone before the big day last weekend. I told them if they only remembered three words from our all our counselling time it would be worth it. Those three words are: love, forgiveness, and gratitude.

I believe having a biblical understanding of those three words and how to apply them in a marriage are the greatest assets for a successful marriage. But what about communication, sex and finances? I preach those a lot, too. But, if you think about it, they fall into the category of love, forgiveness and gratitude.

I am truly grateful to God for my Kathy, my wife, best friend and spiritual partner. Together, over the years, we’ve seen a lot places, and we’ve done a lot of things. I pray in the years ahead together we will see even more places and do more things!
