Are You Serving Others, Or Yourself?

Do I really care about people? Do you really care about people? It was very clear to me.

Recently, in one week, I listened to four different vendors present their services to us in hopes our company would purchase. They included online accounting, business upgrade banking, company credit card tracking, and office essential services. As office manager, my input plays a big part in the owners making a decision one way or the other.

By the end of the week it was so clear to me. Only one of those presentations convinced me they really cared about our business. While all four had good features and some really nice whistles and bells, three of the four mainly focused on how great they were and all the great services they provided.

What they failed to do was to first find what we are currently doing in that area, and next, what we needed that would help us save time or money. For example, during the hour and a half phone presentation with the banking people, we had to tell them three times we do not do wire transfers. Are you listening?

On the other hand, the online accounting company, while showing us how their product works, focused on our needs. He asked us lots of questions about what we’re doing now, and showed how his product could help. One feature alone is going to save me about two hours a week.

I heard a phrase many years ago. I don’t know who said it first, but many people have said it over the years. It is so true.

People don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care.

Whether you have a product, service, or a ministry, we all have something to give people, hopefully to benefit them. If we want to do a better job at serving people at our jobs, in our homes, or in our churches, we need to find out where they are today, and where they want to go.

A great key is to ask questions, and then listen. Numerous times that week when we tried to communicate what we needed, they came right back with how fantastic their product was with their really cool features; many of those features did not even apply to our operation!

Practice What You Preach

That week reminded me of something I’ve known for a long time, and I decided to apply it to this blog. In an endeavor to do a better job of serving you, my readers, I’m going to ask you some questions.

I’m going to do my first annual survey right here on the blog!

In the very near future you’ll see a link for the survey. It will be anonymous. And, I will post the results. My desire is that the information you give me about you will then help me to better serve you.

I do hope you will take a few minutes to fill out the simple survey, coming right here in a few days!
