This is the information age, and millions of people get tons of information every day on the Internet. It’s fast and easy to search for what you’re looking for. And you don’t even have to be sitting at your computer; you can even verbally ask the app on your smartphone a question!
Many times at the office where I work, I opt to get an answer I need from the Internet rather than call customer service. Years ago, needing an answer, my boss said, “Just Google it.” So often when calling for support on the phone, you have to endure all the prompts, then have to wait a long time in line, and then finally you get to speak to someone who might not speak English very well.
Google It
I saw a statistic recently. “Google now processes over 40,000 search queries every second on average, which translates to over 3.5 billion searches per day, and 1.2 trillion searches per year worldwide.” That’s a whole lot of people looking for a whole lot of things.
Want to know the world’s tallest, fastest and longest dive coaster in the world? Google it. Sandusky, Ohio’s Cedar Point amusement park debuted the Valravn dive roller coaster this past May. It’s over 3,400-feet-long and includes a drop of over 200 feet.
But just because you saw it online, doesn’t necessarily mean it’s true. Like me, you’ve probably done searches before, and checked multiple sources, only to find many different answers. It’s like a quote I saw recently on Facebook: “The trouble with quotes on the Internet is that you can never know if they are genuine.” That quote was attributed to Abraham Lincoln.
Searching For Spiritual Information?
When it comes to searching for spiritual information, the longtime authority is the Bible, which many Christians refer to as God’s Word. When rightly understood, it is the truth, whether anyone believes it or not. But it’s pretty obvious with so many differing viewpoints, all supposedly coming from the Bible, that someone is not rightly understanding it.
Of course you can’t find anything in the Bible about how to repair an automobile engine. But you can find out how to conduct yourself as an employee, whether you work in auto repair or sales. And it also gives accurate information on how to conduct yourself if you happen to have employees working for you.
But, of even greater importance, is that Bible also gives accurate, truthful information on how you can have a personal, intimate relationship with God Almighty. Understanding and utilizing that relationship allows you to hear from Him. In other words, He can give you information, revealing to you what you need to know concerning any and all areas of your life.
Google, as well as the other search engines are very helpful. When I was a child I had to either look it up in the dictionary, the encyclopedia, or, go to the big building with all the books in it to get the information I needed. Today, much time is indeed saved with the technology of the information age.
3.5 Billion Searches A Day?
But, I wonder what our world would be like if the Bible got 3.5 billion searches a day? Understanding God’s Word is indeed beneficial, and very vital. Jesus often said things like, “Have you never read?” and “Search the scriptures.” The Apostle Paul said, “When you read this you can perceive my insight into the mystery of Christ.”
I’m glad the Bible is all over the Internet. If you Google “Bible,” it shows around 382 million results. You’ll find quite a selection both in versions and languages. One of my favorite online versions is the Blue Letter Bible because I like the study tools.
There’s no lack of information today. No wonder many refer to our time as “The Information Age.” There is lots of it right at our fingertips.
Take time to search out and read the Book of Life. Whether it’s on your computer, smartphone, tablet, or the old fashioned way, with pages bound into a real book. Personally, I take advantage of all avenues.
