I’ve never heard anyone say, “I can’t wait to get older!” We all want to stay young. In fact we want to live forever, don’t we? Why is that?
Is there something in our genes that makes us yearn to live, and live, and keep living? I think so. And do you know how much people pay to try to look and feel younger?
We know the physical body we have now is not going to last forever, so eating right and exercising regularly to stay healthy and live longer is a good thing. Many of us (myself included) would admit we could improve in those areas. But that aside, the amount of money people spend to look and feel younger is astronomical.
From the information I have seen, Americans spend around $10 billion a year on beauty products. Over $10 billion a year in the United States alone is spent on cosmetic surgery. The diet industry in the U.S. is a $100 billion dollar per year industry with Americans spending $40 billion a year on weight-loss programs and products.
Americans spend around $2.6 billion a year on gym memberships, but studies show only 8% of those with memberships even use them. This is not to mention other related expenditures including home exercise equipment and DVD workout courses.
I’m not being critical about any of those things; my point is how much we spend every year. And the motive for all of this is what? Bottom line? We want to live, and live, and not get old and die.
So, what price would you pay to live forever? If there was a price you could pay to live forever, many, many people would do anything and everything to pay it, wouldn’t they? Of course they would; look at how much is spent just to try to look and feel younger.
I believe we have within our human soul a craving to live forever, put there by our Creator. God’s original plan was for humans to live and keep living. Back in the Garden of Eden, Adam messed things up, and so God came up with a plan to give away eternal life to whoever wanted it!
You Mean It’s Free?
I know there are Christians who are working really hard to “make it.” But the Bible is crystal clear that eternal life is a gift from God, not earned by any work that we do. God’s plan was to send His only begotten Son, who would pay the price necessary to redeem all of mankind, so that eternal life would then be available to all people.
For you and me, it’s a free gift from God, but a very, very high price was paid on our behalf, the life of Jesus Christ. Now it is up to each person to either believe that or not. But, if the Bible is true, then the consequence of that decision is huge!
How does one receive this gift of eternal life? How do you access it? What do you have to do to obtain it?
In the Gospel of John it says that whosoever believes in God’s only begotten Son, shall not perish but have everlasting life. The Book of Romans says what specifically to believe concerning Jesus. Confess, or believe and acknowledge that he is lord – he is the man that is the lord of all men who have ever lived. Believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, and you shall be saved!
Can it be that easy? Some don’t think so, and simply dismiss it. Others believe they have to do good works to make it. Honestly, just how many “good works” would it really take to gain eternal life?
People invest time and money to look and feel younger and to stay healthy. But we all know the clock keeps ticking. Eventually, the clock wins; then what?
There is a day coming when Jesus Christ will return. At that day, those who have died, who have believed in Jesus, will all be raised from the dead with a new incorruptible body. Those who are alive the day he returns will also be changed from mortal to immortal with a brand new body.
Here’s the really cool part: God raised Jesus Christ from the dead, and he had a new incredible body that was definitely beyond the scope of his previous human body. The Bible says that when he returns, those who believe in him will get a body that is fashioned like his resurrected body!
God’s plan is not for us to float around like amoeba bubbles or spirits for all eternity. We are going to get a physical body that is going to last forever! Isn’t that what we all really want anyway?
If this is really true, and I absolutely believe it is, then it’s really good news for us who believe in Jesus, and we have something really big to share with people we know.
So the next time you’re in the gym, or at the healthy section at the grocery store, or at the beauty salon, or out taking a jog, you may have the opportunity to ask someone a really important question. How long are you going to live?
