While our newborn was in her crib in the next room, I remember lying in bed with my wife. “She’s asleep,” we would tell each other, and then I nodded off to sleep.
In the morning, with half shut eyes and wild hair, I asked, “Did she sleep all night?” A tired mother looked back at me with disbelief: “How did you not hear her at 2, and again at 4?”
The truth is, I did wake up, occasionally. And whether at night or daytime, during those early months, we kept our ears tuned, listening for the baby. Of course we did; we had a helpless baby in the house that totally depended upon us for everything!
Now this is astounding!
Now when I read in the epistle of I Peter, “His ears are open unto their prayers,” I find that remarkably astounding. It also says something very similar in Psalm 34.
If His ears are open, then He’s always listening? To me? The Creator of the heavens and earth hears all my prayers?
I would think maybe only at an appointed time He might be listening. Or maybe when I’m in a certain place He might be listening. Or, only if I earned it by being a good boy He might be listening.
But, on second thought, where could I possibly go, or what could I possibly do to deserve the ear of the Creator?
In order for me to “get the ear” of a Governor or a Senator, there would have to be something very special about me to get that kind of attention. People who work for large corporations rarely ever even see the CEO, let alone have a conversation.
He is listening, always!
When it comes to God Almighty listening to my prayers, it really has nothing to do with me, and everything to do with Him! Because of His great love, He is listening, always. That’s His choice.
He may not answer all our prayers in the way or time frame we think He should, but be assured, He is listening. And, since Scripture so often directs us to pray, we can do our part, knowing He is listening, and then keep on praying and let Him do His part in answering.
Isn’t it also remarkable to consider that those who accept and believe in Jesus are now children of God? We are literally His children and He is literally our Father. And as a good Father, His ears are open unto our prayers..
