I thought it was a good plan since I had not read the whole book of Proverbs in quite awhile. But reading a chapter a day did not work. It came to an abrupt halt at Chapter 3.
Day One, Chapter One: I enjoyed reading from the KJV, the NIV, and RSV. My mobile Bible app makes it very easy to read other versions. On day two, I read Chapter Two: very enjoyable. But then, on Day Three, I had to put the brakes on; I had to stop my plan because of what I saw!
Many understand the book of Proverbs as a book filled with wisdom. The great theologian E.W. Bullinger states the Hebrew word for “proverbs” means “words which are to rule and govern the life.” There is indeed much practical wisdom, and Chapter Three just explodes on the page with great wisdom, practical direction, and promises from God.
Here Are A Few Gems
- Keeping God’s commandments adds length of days, long life and peace.
- Keeping mercy and truth, you will find favor and good understanding in the sight of God and man.
- Trust in God with all your heart and acknowledge Him in all your ways and He will direct your path.
- Not being wise in your own eyes (egotistically conceited), but instead reverencing God and departing from evil brings you health.
- Give of your firstfruits and God will bless you back with plenty.
Some Thoughts About Wisdom And Understanding
- If you find wisdom and understanding you will be happy.
- Gaining wisdom and understanding is far better than gaining silver and fine gold, and is more precious than rubies; nothing you can desire can be compared.
- Wisdom and understanding brings length of days, and riches and honor, pleasantness and paths of peace.
- Keeping wisdom and understanding brings life and grace, safety, and sweet sleep without fear.
Wow!
So, my plan to read “a chapter a day” came to a halt at Chapter Three. I re-read it for several days, absorbing and learning. And now, hopefully, it will extend to applying the great wisdom I saw, and expecting His promises.
