What Kind Of Love Is This?

              WHAT KIND OF LOVE IS THIS?

Hearts are everywhere!  Love is in the air!  ‘Tis the season for love!

February 14th is called, “Valentine’s Day.” For lots of folks, it’s a time to express love for your special someone. Flowers, candy, balloons, jewelry – ahh, love is in the air.

Estimated money spent in the U.S. last year for this holiday was around 23.9 billion dollars! That’s not a typo – 23.9 billion dollars! But wait!  Last year 1.1 billion was spent on pets!  Yes, pets.

You can read lots of articles online about the history and origins of “Valentine’s Day.” Instead of putting some of that in this post, I’d rather make a point about the greatest love of all.

The Bible tells us God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in him will not perish, but have everlasting life.

The motivation for God sending a savior, His Son, Jesus Christ, was love! God so loved the world – people, all people! God’s desire for all people is that they do not perish (be completely obliterated and gone forever), but instead, have everlasting life!

His desire and love was so big, He paid a whole lot more than the billions spent every year for Valentine’s Day. No comparison! He gave His Son to pay the price for the sins of the whole world. And each person can now choose to either believe it or not.

IT’S NOT MY CHRISTIAN DUTY

Why Do You Do What You Do?


I don’t like the phrase, “my Christian duty.” It sounds very mandatory and obligatory. I don’t do things because its “my Christian duty,” nor do I encourage others to do things out of “Christian duty.”

In third grade my friend Dallas was waiting for me to walk to school. When I finally walked out of my house, I told him I was sorry for being late but that my mother had me go back and brush my teeth. I asked him if his mother makes him brush his teeth. He answered, “No, I brush them so I don’t get cavities.”

I hadn’t actually considered that reason to brush my teeth. I’m sure my mom probably told me. Yet, at that moment, it really struck me. From that day forward my motivation for brushing teeth changed.

The word “duty” is defined as a moral or legal obligation, a task or action that someone is required to perform. When it comes to living our lives as Christians, according to what the Bible teaches, do we do and say those things because it is our Christian duty? Because we have to? Because we are supposed to? I don’t.

You Can’t Erase His Love

The song below, No Matter What, was released last year. It was the third single from Ryan Stevenson’s second studio album. Here’s what he said in an interview about the inspiration for this song.

“Over the course of the last several years, I’ve continued to ask the Lord to give me songs that exist for a reason. As we were working on this new record, a reoccurring theme I felt the Lord continually whisper to my heart was ‘beloved identity.’ I, like many of us, grew up in the church- a religious environment, where we weren’t necessarily nurtured and taught about God’s grace, patience and compassion. As I continue to grow and experience life, the truth I continue to encounter is ‘I am His son, no matter what.’ It is easy to fall into the trap of performance-based relationship with God when we’ve been taught in religious environments that He’s mostly disappointed with us.
