A New Year is upon us; 2013 is here. A New Year with exciting potential and hope for a grand year ahead! Yay!
Uh, what planet am I talking about here?
I realize that for some people, being optimistic in this day and time seems very naïve. Much of the world is in turmoil, economically and politically. Here in my country our national debt continues to grow out of control and all the politicians blame each other for the country’s financial mess.
No matter where you live, the facts, not the hype, but the facts are the facts. The debt, the job market, taxes, etc. are all what they are and there is no denying the true facts. However, each of us decides how we respond to the current facts.
Every day I have the choice to be optimistic or pessimistic, positive or negative, solution-oriented or excuse-driven. It is my choice. It’s your choice, too.
I can choose to allow the current circumstances to determine my New Year. I could even come up with a list of valid excuses as to why things are not going the way I’d like them to be going. But, I heard once, “Even valid excuses are never impressive.”
Now I certainly don’t want to bury my head in the sand, pretend everything is fine, and deny the facts; again, the facts are what they are. But I don’t want to fixate on all the negative facts. That does not encourage or inspire me; as a matter of fact it is downright depressing.
There Is Another Option
Once again in this brand New Year I choose to put my trust in God. Why? Because I firmly believe the Bible is true, and the Bible shows us that God will help those who put their trust in Him, and I have seen that happen over and over in my life.
There have been times when my back was up against the wall and I had no solution. But God has always been kind and faithful to provide the solution I needed at the time, whether it was finances, health, or other needs.
God promises that He will direct the paths of those who put their trust in Him, and not in their own understanding. Doesn’t it seem to you a better choice to trust Him to direct your path?
Who You Gonna Trust?
People put their trust in other people, in organizations, in jobs, and in investments or savings. Many people today have put their trust in their government. How has all that worked out for them?
The Bible is full of incidents of God supplying to those who trust Him. From nameless people to entire nations, you can read of His great power and unlimited resources. Trusting God will bring you to a safe and peaceful harbor in the midst of all the stormy uncertainty surrounding us.
Once again this year I will spend time doing what the scriptures advise me to do: casting all my cares on my heavenly Father because he cares for me. I will do my best to not get stressed, but rather will let Him know my requests. I will remind myself that He is a very present help in time of need.
A New Year
So, what’s ahead for this New Year? What can you and I expect? Challenges and obstacles. So what’s new about that?
Yes, it is a New Year. Many people make plans and resolutions for the coming year, anticipating a better year ahead than the last one, and that’s a really cool thing to do. But when you think about it, each day when we wake up, it is a brand new day.
In this New Year, each new day we can choose to put our absolute trust in God. Regardless of circumstances, challenges, setbacks, or unfairness, we can choose to trust God for His help and solutions. Every day in this New Year is truly a new day we can choose to trust Him.
