There Is A Reason It Has Been Overlooked

It’s great significance has been overlooked.

There Is a good reason.

This week I am posting some things here on the blog that I did last year at this time as we are mindful of the resurrection of God’s Son, the Lord Jesus Christ.

A key point that has been overlooked is that women found out first.  The reason it’s significance has been overlooked is because of not understanding the culture in which the Bible was written.

Here is a podcast I posted last year called,  The Women Found Out First.

Was It A Lie?

This coming Sunday is “Easter Sunday” and this week I am posting some things I put here on the blog last year.

Today, from last March, “The Greatest Lie Ever Told.”

The Greatest Lie Ever Told!

There is a lie that has been going around for centuries.  It is the biggest lie ever told.  In this post, you will see it clearly and logically.

There are a number of verses in the Bible that talk about God raising Jesus Christ from the dead.  There have been others who have been raised from the dead, including Lazarus, but this event was different.  This is in a class of its own.

Jesus Christ was resurrected from the dead to die no more.

Some, however, believe that it was just a lie.  People are entitled to their opinion.  But the question for the naysayers is, “Where is their proof?”  “Where is there evidence?”

Were The Disciples Promoting A Lie?

The information in the Scriptures, the historical evidence, as well as the actions and speech of those in the first century clearly show that the resurrection of Jesus Christ was greatly promoted.  If they were promoting a lie, then it was the biggest lie ever told.  And if it was a lie, then some of the ways that they promoted it were just plain stupid.

First, as with any disagreement, there needs to be that which both parties can agree upon. If we are going to discuss the resurrection, then here are some things we need to agree upon first.

The Facts We Can Agree On

1. Jesus lived. If someone does not believe he ever existed, then it is pointless to discuss a resurrection.  Besides, it is much easier to prove that he lived than it is to prove his resurrection.

2. There were certain Jewish leaders who instigated his death and the Romans ordered it and carried it out. Unless you believe that he was crucified it makes no sense to talk about the resurrection. It is much easier to prove the crucifixion than it is the resurrection.

3. He was indeed dead. It is pointless to have a discussion about a resurrection unless someone is dead.

4. Where he was buried was a known, accessible tomb. The tombs’ location was known by Jesus’ followers, The Jewish leaders, and by the Romans.

5. The Jewish leaders who were responsible for his death would be very interested in disproving a resurrection. If Jesus were raised from the dead, then those who instigated his death, which is very easy to prove, would lose all of their credibility.  It is very logical that they would do whatever it took to disprove the resurrection.

6. Many preached that he had been raised from the dead. They not only preached that he was raised from the dead, but they preached it in the same city where Jesus Christ was killed.

7. Followers of Jesus Christ were persecuted because of the preaching of the resurrection. There were in fact on a number of occasions told specifically not preach the resurrection of Jesus.

8. The known, accessible tomb that Jesus was buried in was indeed empty. Since it is easy to prove and document that certain Jewish leaders did indeed instigate his death, logically then, they would be very interested in disproving a resurrection.  By their very actions of persecuting those who preached the resurrection, we know that they knew that the tomb was empty.  In persecuting those who preached the resurrection, no one ever said, ‘”He is still buried.”  The tomb was indeed empty.

All of those eight facts are much easier to prove than the resurrection. And if you acknowledge those facts then you are left with only two choices:  Either the disciples lied or they told the truth.

If It Was A Lie, Then What They Said Was Stupid!

If it didn’t happen, if it isn’t true, then it is a lie.  And if it is a lie, then those in the first century who preached his resurrection were liars.  And those who wrote the Scriptures were also promoting a lie.  And, as I said before, if it was a lie, some of the ways they promoted it were just plain stupid.

For example, the Scriptures state the following facts:  Jesus was indeed in a tomb; The Jewish leaders knew where it was; A Roman guard was dispatched, which means Roman soldiers knew where it was; The Roman soldiers witnessed something supernatural; The Jewish leaders knew something supernatural happened, because the soldiers told them; The Jewish leaders paid large sums of money to the soldiers to lie!

If you are trying to promote something that is not true, then why use details that could easily be documented?  Many of those things would be a matter of public record:  the religious leaders’ meeting with Pilate, the assigning of soldiers, and the sealing of the tomb; so many things would be easily documented, and therefore easy to verify.  In other words, if you were promoting a lie you would be found out rather quickly.

And Here’s The Biggest Blunder

And if it was just a lie, then perhaps the biggest blunder had to do with the accounts on that Sunday morning, Easter Sunday, referred to by some as Resurrection Sunday.  If you really think about it, there is no way any person in their right mind, intentionally promoting a lie, could ever tell the story that they told.

If you take the time to read all four Gospels, they all testify that the news of the resurrection was given first to women.  They also tell of Jesus first appearing to Mary Magdalene, and then to the other women.  And finally, the scriptures concur that angels told the women to go and tell the others that Jesus was raised from the dead.

You would never come up with a story like that if you were promoting a lie; at least not in that culture!  If you really wanted people to believe you, in that culture, you would never have women as the first eyewitnesses.  No one would believe you.  And notice that when the women told the men, they did not believe them.

In that day and time and culture the women did not have all the rights that men had.  Even today in some cultures women do not have the same rights that men have.  So, if you were promoting a lie, in that culture, you would never, ever have women playing such an important role.

This Is Evidence – This Is Real Proof!

This speaks so very loudly and hardly anyone ever even notices.  Yet, it could easily be classified as evidence and proof of the resurrection!  In that culture, an angel appearing to a man would be much more credible than an angel appearing to a woman, and then telling the woman to go and tell the men.

Where Is Their Proof?

Finally, there is no evidence in history, anywhere, of anyone, who was an eyewitness, ever retracting their story, or recanting, or denying, or saying that it was just a big lie.  Even those who were killed, martyred for their beliefs, still never denied the resurrection. You don’t pay that high of a price for a lie.

It is absurd to even consider that the resurrection of Jesus Christ was a lie with no evidence of any of the eyewitnesses ever discounting it. In fact, there is no solid evidence anywhere, from anyone that disproves the resurrection of Jesus Christ.  There is no evidence!

For many Christians the Scriptures themselves stand and they need no defense. What is written is the Word of God.  Many choose to simply accept and believe the divine revelation.

The Greatest Lie Ever Told!

But, in addition to the Scriptures, there is also abundant evidence, and logic. In fact, so much so, that for anyone to say and propound that Jesus Christ was not raised from the dead, they are indeed promoting the greatest lie ever told!

Acts 17:31
Because he hath appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom he hath ordained; whereof he hath given assurance unto all men, in that he hath raised him from the dead.

The absolute assurance that God has given to all people that Jesus Christ is indeed the one that He has ordained, is that He raised him from the dead to die no more.  That is God’s stamp of approval; that is His seal of authenticity.

Now, anyone, anywhere can acknowledge Jesus Christ as the lord of all men, the savior for mankind, the redeemer, the Messiah, God’s only begotten Son – the lord of all men, and believe that God raised him from the dead and receive salvation.

Romans 10:9
That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.

The Women Found Out First

Today is what is referred to as Good Friday.  This time of year many remember the sufferings of Jesus.  And of course this Sunday is Easter, which some call, “Resurrection Sunday,” as we remember Jesus Christ being raised from the dead to die no more.

If you haven’t read the article I posted this past Wednesday, The Greatest Lie Ever Told,  check it out; it has some great information about the resurrection.  In this short podcast (7:43) I wanted to reiterate a very unique point from that article. It is a very important point that almost no one mentions.

Since it involves the culture of Bible times, I have placed this post here in the Eastern Eye category.

Have a joyous weekend!

The Greatest Lie Ever Told!

This Sunday we celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Last week I posted Easter 2010, a short video podcast about a very graphic prophecy concerning the sufferings of Christ.  I am planning to do a podcast this Friday focusing on a very unique aspect of the resurrection.

Today, I am posting from a blog that I did last year on the membership site, Enriching Your Life Now, called, The Greatest Lie Ever Told.  (By the way, if you subscribe to this blog, Confidence And Joy, which is free, then you get total access to the “Enriching” site – that’s a free lifetime membership!)

Easter 2010

Easter is April 4th.  During this time of year we are mindful of the sufferings that Jesus Christ endured on our behalf.  We reflect on the price paid for the redemption of mankind.

In this short video (3:04) I point out three different versions of Isaiah 52:14, a verse that graphically prophesied the extreme physical punishment the Messiah would endure for all of mankind.

He endured all that horrendous punishment and pain.  He laid down his life; he died for us.  And, 3 days and 3 nights later, God raised him from the dead!  The great message at Easter time is, Jesus Christ is alive!

The Two Extremes

It’s Another Podcast!

Sitting in my office yesterday morning, after preparing for our Glendale Fellowship, I had some thoughts.  And as I pondered for awhile, I thought maybe I ought to do a podcast about it.

But, then I wondered if it would just end up being a rant! Well you can decide on that.  I’d like to hear your thoughts on this, so leave a comment after you listen to it.

Even though I have been teaching the Bible for 34 years, I still consider myself a student; I keep learning and growing in my understanding.  It seems to me that when it comes to spiritual beliefs, there are two extremes.  What do you think?

Paid In Full

It’s Another Podcast!

I taught a little bit about the concept of “paid in full” yesterday at the Glendale Fellowship.  I also have a new article coming out on Thursday (Pep Letter) with some of that information as well.  Since it is really hot on my mind, I thought I would do a podcast this morning.

Some religious people might be offended by some of what I say here or in the upcoming article.  I’m not trying to be critical, but, as I wrote in the article, I hope that people take a little time to consider what they believe and why they believe it.

Enjoy the podcast. (9:56)

John 3:16 Compilation

Okay, I decided to do a compilation of all 5 parts of the video series I’ve been doing on John 3:16, the most famous verse in the Bible.  In this video (7:50), I put together all 5 previous videos but left out the introductions.

Isn’t this a marvelous verse?  Someone once referred to it as, “The Gospel in a nutshell.”

Enjoy the video.

John 3:16 Part 4

Here is Part 4 of this 5 part series on John 3:16, the most famous verse in the Bible.  In this fourth short video (2:29), I talk about the greatest person ever.

Bread, Fish And An Egg

From the Category, “The Eastern Eye”

[The Bible is an “Eastern” book.  It was written many years ago in the “East” which today we refer to as “The Middle East.”  As such, there are many customs and idioms that are not familiar to the “Western” mind.]

Jesus Christ taught about prayer many times.  On one occasion, he was making a very important point about prayer.  In doing so, he asked three rhetorical questions.  One question would have been sufficient, but in asking three questions how could one ever miss the point?

However, without understanding the eastern culture, one could not only miss the point, but also wonder what in the world Jesus was talking about. Once again, having an understanding of customs and idioms of that culture makes many puzzling verses very clear.

dog-1This is true in any culture.  Suppose someone was completely unfamiliar with the culture here in the United States and they heard expressions like, “I sat down in the recliner for awhile because my dogs were really barking,” or, “For supper I had a hot dog,” or, “It was hard to sleep because it was raining cats and dogs.”

For readers who may not be familiar with the culture and language here in the United States, “my dogs were barking” is referring to one’s feet being very tired and achy.  Eating a hot dog has nothing to do with a canine, but rather is a sausage that contains beef.  “Raining cats and dogs” simply indicates a very, very heavy rain storm.

Three Questions

Jesus asked those who were listening three questions.  They were questions about a son asking something of his father.  The first was, if a son asked the father for bread, would a father instead give his son a stone?

The second question was, if a son asked his father for a fish, would his dad then give him a serpent instead?  And the final question was, if a son asked his father for an egg would the father in turn give the son a scorpion?

To the eastern mind, this is easily understood.  But to our western minds it seems rather odd.  We might think, “What dad could either be that stupid, or that cruel, to give his child those items instead of what the child asked for?”  But once we understand the culture, the meaning unfolds.

The Bread

In the eastern culture, in the times of the Bible, their bread was round and thin, and it was cooked on both sides.  They then placed the cooked bread on a stone which was about the same size as the bread. They would then stack the bread one on top of the other. Then another stone would be placed on top to protect the bread.

The butter-like substance used in cooking the bread bread-slicedwould soak into the stones and over a period of time, at a glance, the stones might even look like the bread.  But no father would ever be that stupid to mistake a stone for bread and give it to his son who asked him for bread.

The Fish

fish-salmonIn the eastern lands there are some water serpents that look similar to fish.  A person who was unfamiliar with both fish and water serpents could easily mistake one for the other.  But a father who would be concerned about his family would certainly make sure that there was no mistake.  If his son asked for a fish, then that is what a good father would give him.

The Egg

The body of a scorpion is shaped very similar to an egg. The white scorpion in the east could be mistaken for an egg.  I read somewhere that if you were to cut open the body of a white scorpion, the inside is white and yellow.  I have never tried that, though, and I don’t plan to try it!

egg-hard-boiledPerhaps a young child might not recognize the difference between the body of a scorpion and an egg.  But what father would not know?  What father, whose son asked for an egg, would ever mistakenly or even intentionally give his son a scorpion instead?

The answer to all three of these rhetorical questions is obviously a very loud, “No, of course not!”

Here’s The Point

Jesus Christ went on to say, in the Gospel of Luke, that “…if you “then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?”  In Matthew’s Gospel, which is similar, it says, “If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your Father which is in heaven give good things to them that ask him?”

The reference to “being evil” simply means that we are not perfect.  God is perfect.  We don’t always do the right things.  But, even though we are not perfect, we would never give our child a stone instead of bread; a serpent instead of a fish; or a scorpion instead of an egg.  And so, if we, being imperfect, can still give good gifts to our children, how much more will our heavenly Father give us good things including the holy spirit, when we ask Him?

marblesIn our culture perhaps we could understand this if the cottonballsquestion would have been about candy.  If our child asked us for some candy, would we give them marbles instead?  If they asked for some marshmallows, would we give them a cotton ball instead?  Would we?  Well of course not!

A Great Lesson On Prayer

Jesus Christ was teaching about prayer.  He was trying to communicate to them that God our Father will answer our prayers.  And in asking those rhetorical questions it became very clear to the listeners that God is not going to respond to our requests with a counterfeit or something inferior.  He is not going to answer our request with something that would be harmful to us.

Jesus Christ was saying that if you as a dad who is not perfect can still give good gifts, then HOW MUCH MORE shall your heavenly Father give good things, including the holy spirit, to them that ask him?  God our Father is more concerned about His children than earthly fathers are for theirs.

With this understanding we can confidently go to God in prayer. We can be assured knowing that He wants to answer our prayers.  We can truly have confidence in our heavenly Father because He goes way beyond any human dad – much more!

Luke 11:11-13
If a son shall ask bread of any of you that is a father, will he give him a stone? or if he ask a fish, will he for a fish give him a serpent?

Or if he shall ask an egg, will he offer him a scorpion?

If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?

Matthew 7:7-11
Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and you shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you:

For every one that asks receives; and he that seeks finds; and to him that knocks it shall be opened.

Or what man is there of you, whom if his son ask bread, will he give him a stone?

Or if he ask a fish, will he give him a serpent?

If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your Father which is in heaven give good things to them that ask him?

Resources
There are a number of books that you can read to get insight on customs, manners, idioms and meanings from the Eastern culture in which the Bible was written.  The best I know of were written by by Bishop K. C. Pillai.  I have had the pleasure of listening to recorded teaching by him.

He wrote three books, and they are hard to find, and are usually over priced.  But, if you want to you can check this link to see what Amazon has to offer. Light Through an Eastern Window

Another great resource that I have used for years is a book called, “Manners and Customs of the Bible,” by James Freeman. Mine was printed in 1972 and I know they have newer additions.
