MEMORIAL DAY 2021

Monday, May 31, 2021 is Memorial Day. I am again this year posting 3 very moving videos.

Sometimes people get confused – Veterans Day, which is in November, is when we remember everyone who has served our country, at any time in any capacity.  Memorial Day, formerly known as, “Decoration Day,” commemorates men and women who died while in military service to the United States.

It began as a way to honor Union and Confederate soldiers following the American Civil War. Later, it was extended, after World War I, to honor all American military who died in all wars –  we remember those who gave their life in service to our country.

Congress actually established an exact minute of remembrance. The National Moment of Remembrance Act, adopted in December of 2000, encourages every citizen to pause each Memorial Day at 3:00 p.m. local time to remember the brave men and women who died serving this country.

Take some time this weekend to thank God for the freedoms and liberty we still have in this country – because over the years so many gave their lives.  But it is still up to each generation to protect and keep the freedoms we enjoy, because how quickly liberty and freedoms can evaporate!  Continue to pray for our country, and pray for those in government positions who truly love our country and constitution, for God to give them wisdom and courage to speak and do that which will insure our liberties and freedoms to continue.

If you don’t live here in the United States, take some time to pause and pray for God’s help and blessingS on your country.

And, regardless of where we live, how very thankful we are for the ultimate sacrifice made by our Lord Jesus Christ – he gave his life so we could have eternal life – the ultimate freedom – freedom from death itself!

Below are 3 very moving videos that help put this remembrance into perspective.

 THANK YOU!

REMEMBERING OUR INDEPENDENCE

Celebrating 241 Years - Some Quotes

This July 4th marks the 241st anniversary of the USA.  One of our founding fathers, John Adams, talked about remembering and celebrating this anniversary:

“I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival. It ought to be commemorated as the day of deliverance by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty; it ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires and illuminations from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward forever more.” John Adams

Those who fought for the freedoms for the new country, while having differing opinions, knew we needed to

You Have Freedom To Do What?

cabin
I was flying home recently after teaching with others at a Winter Advance on Hayden Lake in Coeur D’alene, Idaho. On the flight from Spokane, I heard the voice of the pilot over the speaker say what he always says, “You are now free to move about the cabin.”

I always chuckle when I hear that. Move about where, and do what? I think what he really means is it’s okay to get up and use the restroom.

So freedom to move about the cabin during a commercial flight is really not

It’s Another Podcast! (Or is it a rant?)

I was going to write an article, but decided at the last minute to just sit down at the microphone and record a podcast.  This one may very well be labeled as a rant.  Some people might not like it at all.

I would really like see your comments after you listen to the whole thing.  It’s not that long (16:45) I really hope it makes you think and pray for your country.  We really do need God’s help.

Please leave a comment regardless of how you feel after hearing this podcast.

America (My Country, ‘Tis of Thee)
My country,’ tis of thee,
sweet land of liberty, of thee I sing;
land where my fathers died,
land of the pilgrims’ pride,
from every mountainside let freedom ring!

My native country, thee,
land of the noble free, thy name I love;
I love thy rocks and rills,
thy woods and templed hills;
my heart with rapture thrills, like that above.

Let music swell the breeze,
and ring from all the trees sweet freedom’s song;
let mortal tongues awake;
let all that breathe partake;
let rocks their silence break, the sound prolong.

Our fathers’ God, to thee,
author of liberty, to thee we sing;
long may our land be bright
with freedom’s holy light;
protect us by thy might, great God, our King.

A High School Teacher Imparts A Lesson

This Wednesday is Veteran’s Day. I am planning a very special post for that day. I will be doing a video about something that I did on my radio show for many years on Veteran’s Day.

I think that it’s a great idea to say, “Thank you,” whenever you see a veteran, but especially on Veteran’s Day. This Wednesday, express your gratitude to our veterans.  When my dad was alive, I used to call him on Veteran’s Day to thank him for his service to our country.

This morning, I thought you might enjoy reading a true story about a high school teacher in Arkansas and what she did to teach her students.

Enjoy this story.

It Happened In 2005

Back in September of 2005, on the first day of school, Martha Cothren, a social studies school teacher at Robinson High School in Little Rock, did something not to be forgotten.

On the first day of school, with the permission of the school superintendent, the principal and the building supervisor, she removed all of the desks out of her classroom. When the first period kids entered the room they discovered that there were no desks.

Looking around, confused, they asked, “Ms. Cothren, where’re our desks?”

She replied, “You can’t have a desk until you tell me what you have done to earn the right to sit at a desk.

They thought, “Well, maybe it’s our grades.”

No,” she said.

“Maybe it’s our behavior.”

She told them, “No, it’s not even your behavior.”

And so, they came and went, the first period, second period, third period. Still no desks in the classroom. By early afternoon, television news crews had started gathering in Ms. Cothren’s classroom to report about this crazy teacher who had taken all the desks out of her room.

The final period of the day came and as the puzzled students found seats on the floor of the classroom devoid of desks, Martha Cothren said, “Throughout the day no one has been able to tell me just what he or she has done to earn the right to sit at the desks that are ordinarily found in this classroom.

Now I am going to tell you.”

At this point, Martha Cothren went over to the door of her classroom and opened it. Twenty-seven (27) U.S. Veterans, all in uniforms, walked into that classroom, each one carrying a school desk. The Vets began placing the school desks in rows, and then they would walk over and stand alongside the wall.

By the time the last soldier had set the final desk in place, those kids started to understand, perhaps for the first time in their lives, just how the right to sit at those desks had been earned.

Martha said, “You didn’t earn the right to sit at these desks. These heroes did it for you. They placed the desks here for you. Now, it’s up to you to sit in them. It is your responsibility to learn, to be good students, to be good citizens. They paid the price so that you could have the freedom to get an education. Don’t ever forget it.”

Sometimes we only hear the bad news.  But there are a lot of really good teachers out there.  Maybe they are not as dramatic as Martha, but many of them are doing their best to really teach the children.

In fact, one of my neighbors, Len, has been a teacher for many years. He has a wonderful heart for his students. I am thankful for all those teachers who are truly helping our children.  God bless you!

Born Again American

It’s Another Video!

A friend of mine sent me the link to this video, and I think it’s pretty cool.  16 performers and two choruses in 14 locations around the USA.  I thought the video was very well produced and carries a very positive message. Watch it and if you have any comments, please type them in below.

How This Video Came About

The video is the product of Declare Yourself.  The founder,  Norman Lear (TV producer and philanthropist), was talking with Academy Award-winning songwriter Keith Carradine one night, and the Born Again American video was born.  There is more information, including the lyrics to the song on their web site.

Enjoy the video.
