This Year

Tao-Porchon Lynch

A new year is dawning. 2015 is here. What are you expecting? What kind of year will it be for you?

Many will make New Year’s Resolutions; others will not. Overachievers and perfectionists will become disappointed, while underachievers will be saying, “Oh, well, who cares?” But what if, just what if, this ends up being the best year of your life?

Sure, it’s easy to say that’s being overly optimistic. Someone else could just as easily say, “What if this year ends up being worse than last year; what if it ends up being the worst year of your life?”

While I’m not at all inclined to expect this new year to be the worst year of my life, but what if it ends up being the best year of my life? I’d rather put that thought in my mind, even if someone thinks it to be ridiculously inconsequentially optimistic.

I recently read an article about Tao Porchon-Lynch. I’m not sure if she’s the oldest teacher in the world, but she’s 96 years old and still teaching yoga classes! She actually won a ballroom dancing competition at the young age of 89!

Now that may be impressive, but her philosophy of life is even more impressive. She said, “I don’t believe in age. When people ask me about age, I tell them to look at all the trees around them. They’re hundreds of years old. They may look as if they’re dying at the moment, but they’re not; they’re recycling themselves. And in a couple of months, they’re going to be reborn again.”

“Whatever you put in your mind materializes. So if you put negative thoughts, you draw toward negative things. So be positive. Just look for good.”

And finally, I love this quote: “When I get up in the morning, I don’t think about all the things that are going to happen, whether it’s good or bad. I say to myself, ‘This is going to be the best day of my life.”

So what kind of year are you expecting in 2015? Why not expect it to be the best year of your life so far? Of course there’ll be bumps in the road. But whether good days or some not so good days, thank God in this New Year, we can start all over again, expecting each new day to be the best day of our lives.

And as we forget the things that are behind, reaching forward to the things ahead, we can choose to put our hand in our heavenly Father’s hand, putting our trust in Him, looking for His help and His guidance.

Happy New Year!

  1. Thanks Mike for the great encouraging thoughts! So easy to put our minds in the old frame. Pushing forward and making the effort to change is always a great challenge. But like your article from this wonderful woman testifies to us, just put one thought in front of the other! Have a Happy New Year Mike and all of God’s blessings. Love len
