God’s Resume

Being a longtime fan of the Bible, I am familiar with the stories or records we can read. Many are incredible events that happened to individuals, groups of people, and even whole nations.  Have you ever considered those records are not really about the people in them?

In re-reading those accounts I am still amazed at the miraculous things that happened to and for people.  But, I believe those accounts are not really about them, but rather, they are about our God. The Bible declares and reveals who God is.

Sure, we are unbelievably amazed as we ponder the Red Sea opening up, and God’s people walking across on dry ground, aren’t we?  We think of how it must have felt for them to escape the Egyptian army in such a miraculous and unheard of manner.  We wonder how it felt to see their enemy completely annihilated; it was quite a deliverance.

And while it does show in vivid detail God’s people dramatically rescued and delivered, more than that it shows the power and ability of our God.  His resources are such to facilitate making a way when there is no way, when all seems hopeless.  It begs the question, “Is there anything too hard for God?”

Time after time after time in the Bible, you read of God’s miraculous delivering power.  And while we cheer and rejoice for the recipients of His power, each incident is another testimony of God’s power, love, and willingness to help in time of need. Let me state it another way.

His Resume?

Could I be so bold as to say that the Bible contains God’s resume?  Is that blasphemy, or is it just plain silly?  But isn’t a resume a summary of your experiences and skills, highlighting your accomplishments to show you are qualified?

When it comes to physical healing, there is record after record in the Bible of God healing any and all manner of sickness and disease.  Is He not therefore qualified to call upon when we need healing?  When we read about someone in the Bible who received healing, we can remind ourselves that this is yet another testimony of God’s power, love, and willingness to heal.

God is skilled and experienced in dealing with impossible situations.  Is He not therefore qualified to call upon when we need help in situations which seem impossible?  So when we read about deliverance in an impossible situation, we can remind ourselves that this is yet another testimony of God’s power, love, and willingness to deliver, even in seemingly impossible situations.

What About For You?

Many years ago when I first started reading records about healing and deliverance in the Bible, I was happy for those who received.  I just figured they were good, spiritual people who somehow earned or deserved it. I certainly didn’t think I qualified for that.

But when I learned what God made available to those who accept Christ as His Son, who confess him as lord of all men and believe that God raised him from the dead, I was stunned.  He has freely given me eternal life and nothing can separate me from His love.  He made me righteous and acceptable in His sight, and He has given me forgiveness.

Link that together with His “resume” and you will have much, much more confidence in asking for and expecting His help.  His power, love and willingness have not changed, and He loves you unconditionally.  No wonder in the Scriptures He encourages us over and over to pray and ask Him for His help!

So when you read the Bible, rejoice in those who received great things from God.  Try to feel what they felt.  But always remember, when you read those records, it’s really not about them, it’s all about our God.
