The Lost Message

What Is Pentecost All About?

This Sunday is Pentecost Sunday on the Church calendar.  What exactly do we celebrate? We are told that the celebration is all about commemorating the descent of the holy spirit upon the Apostles.

But could Pentecost be of even greater importance and significance than the birth of Christ?

I don’t normally do this, but for this occasion, I am posting yesterday’s article from The Pep Letter, my weekly newsletter.  I thought it would be some really good information for those who don’t subscribe to The Pep Letter.

What Is The Significance?

In the article below, you will discover the significance of the day of Pentecost spoken of in Acts  2. I believe that the message of Pentecost has been lost. Read and see what you think.

When it comes to Christmas, people understand they are celebrating the birth of Christ.  But when it comes to Pentecost, there are many who wonder what it is really all about.

The Lost Message of Pentecost

When it comes to Pentecost, what exactly do we celebrate? We are told that the celebration is all about commemorating the descent of the holy spirit upon the Apostles.  That event was recorded with a number of details in the book of Acts. But is Pentecost of even greater importance and significance than the birth of Christ?

There are a number of popular celebrations on the Church calendar.  The biggest and most popular is Christmas.  People understand they are celebrating the birth of Christ.  But when it comes to Pentecost, there are many who wonder what it is really all about.

What is the real significance of what occurred to those twelve apostles?  Is it possible that it was the greatest event to date in the history of mankind?  Has the great message of Pentecost been lost?

Ever since the book of Genesis, when man first came on the scene, having body, soul and spirit, there have been a number of events that have affected all of mankind.  Through the centuries there have been hurricanes, tornadoes, earthquakes and volcanoes.  But what happened in the Garden when Adam sinned was the worst disaster for human beings that has ever happened.

Even though there were only two people immediately affected, the consequences would be felt by billions and billions; the consequences would affect every single human being ever born, with the exception of Jesus Christ.

It is because of not understanding what happened when Adam sinned that results in not understanding what happened on the original day of Pentecost.  Adam was told that if he ate of the tree in the midst of the garden he would surely die.  If you are familiar with the record then you know that both Adam and Eve ate of that fruit.

Yet, if you continue reading in the Bible, they both lived for many, many years.  But God had said, “In the day you eat, you will die,” meaning that very day. By taking a closer look one can see that Adam and Eve were formed made and created with two life forms: soul and spirit.

The absence of life is indicated by the word, “death.”  What died that day for Adam and Eve was the spirit life that God intended for all human beings to have.  It is very significant to note that it was the spirit life that enabled them to have a close personal relationship with God.

When they lost spirit life, they still had body and soul life. But they had lost their connection with the Creator.  And, this loss was passed on to all men and women. This was a cataclysmic event, with devastating consequences on all of mankind.

Since very few understand what happened back in the Garden of Eden with Adam and Eve, they fail to see its connection to Pentecost.  But it was after the fall of mankind that God set in motion a plan to redeem mankind.  Because of Adam’s sin, human beings were now incomplete; they were lacking the spirit of God.

During the process of God’s plan, you can read about how God gave certain individuals His spirit on a temporary basis.  But it was not available to any and all human beings.  It took the completed work of Jesus Christ, the savior of mankind, to fulfill all that was necessary.

On that first day of Pentecost, Peter delivered quite a sermon.  It contained a number of references to God’s gift of holy spirit.  He concluded his message by exhorting those listening to change their minds, get baptized, and told them that they too would receive the gift holy spirit.   About 3,000 accepted the invitation.

Jesus taught his followers on many occasions about the coming of holy spirit. It was a major topic at the last Supper.  And after he was resurrected, the first time he got together with his disciples he talks to them about receiving the holy spirit.

On the day of the ascension, right before he left, the very last thing he talked about was about receiving the holy spirit.

If you look closely at Peter’s message on the day of Pentecost, it is filled with information about the spirit of God.

The lost message of Pentecost is the beginning of holy spirit for all of mankind.  That was the day when God officially made His holy spirit available to anyone and everyone.  The reason God wants everyone to have His spirit is so that He can have a close personal relationship just like He had with Adam and Eve in the Garden before the fall.

And while Adam and Eve could and did, lose the spirit of God, this time around, God made it permanent.  He has given us all eternal life which means you cannot lose it.

What a great day in the history of mankind Pentecost was!  God has opened the door for anyone and everyone to receive His gift of holy spirit.  No wonder Peter later referred to that day as, “the beginning.”  Now it is up to us to learn how to utilize and operate this gift of holy spirit that God has freely given us.

We Are Reminded Every Day

sad-faceWhen was the last time you watched or listened to a news report and there was nothing reported about the economy?  Not only do we hear about the economy in every newscast, but in almost every conversation.  We are consistently reminded of how lousy the situation is.

Now if you choose to only focus on that information, you will be pretty discouraged, upset, afraid, angry, etc.  How can you stay positive and trust God when that’s all you hear every single day?

But, on the other hand, we all spend money on a regular basis, don’t we?  And there is a nice little reminder on every piece of currency that we have.  Most of the time we don’t even look at it or think about it.   We just pay the transaction and go on our merry way.

But why not stop and think about it for a moment or two?  “In God We Trust.”  Even if you are writing a check or using a debit card, those things represent money.  We can stop and remind ourselves that our trust is in our God.

Some may choose to continue to put their trust in the in-god-2government.  They will look to Uncle Sam to provide for them.  Everyone makes their own choices.

I would much rather put my trust in my Father, God, than in my Uncle San.  God has a proven track record that is impeccable.  Uncle Sam, well……

Happy Mother’s Day!

I wanted to wish all the Moms a very Happy Mother’s day!  heart bouquet

The way God set it all up, we all have a Mom!  I told my daughter the other day, “Aren’t you glad we don’t come from eggs?”  She said, “Yeah, that would be awful for a mom to have to sit on an egg until it hatched!”

Some of us still have our Mom around, and I am thankful I get to call my Mom today to wish her a Happy Mother’s Day.  Our kids will be contacting Kathy just as people all over recognize their Moms today.

By The Way, Are You…?

By the way, I think it is very cool to be a Mom.  And, I’ve said this for years; “I love pregnant women!” I always have.  So, if I ever meet you, and you’re pregnant, then I am going to give you a big hug!

Happy Mother’s day!

It’s Our Day

heartThe wedding took place in a very small Justice of the Peace office in El Paso, Texas.  It was a Saturday afternoon.  The official performing the ceremony was wearing black slacks and a T-shirt.   We were in our jeans.

I’ve often told young people who are planning their wedding that it doesn’t matter where you get married, who attends the ceremony, or who does the service.

Don’t get me wrong.  Weddings, big and small, with all the things that go with them, and there can be many, are wonderful.  They can be expensive, even smaller ones, but, if that’s what the couple wants, and they can afford it, more power to them.

I have officiated at many, many weddings, in sizes from less than 10 to over 500.  I’ve performed weddings in living rooms, hotel ballrooms, and even on the beach.  All of them, in their own way, have been very special.

Here’s The Point

heartThe point I want to make is that regardless of who performs the wedding ceremony, where the location is, and how many attend, none of that is any guarantee that the marriage will last.  For a marriage to last it is going to take the love and commitment of both the bride and the groom.

On that Saturday afternoon in El Paso, Texas, Kathy and I made a commitment; it was a lifetime commitment.  Four years after we got married, we began to study the Bible.  We have tried to base our marriage on biblical principles ever since.

Love is a choice; you choose to love.  Thankfulness is a choice; you choose to be grateful.  Forgiveness is a choice; you choose to forgive.  I think those three are all very important keys in a successful marriage.

heartToday Is Our Day

Today, our wedding anniversary again falls on a Saturday.  I am filled with memories of the drive in our VW van from Carlsbad, New Mexico (where we lived) to El Paso, Texas. We had supper that night at McDonald’s, and spent the night in a Motel 6. We drove back to Carlsbad the next day as happy newlyweds.

I’m thankful to God for the most wonderful woman I know, a woman full of love, thankfulness and forgiveness.  She is still the girl of my dreams and the love of my life.

And while we don’t have a wedding album of pictures to look at, or a piece of frozen wedding cake in the freezer, or a wedding dress packed away in a box, we have each other!   So, on this, our 39th anniversary, I just wanted to say, “Happy Anniversary, Kathy, I love you!”

Something Personal

Two Quick Items Today

Tomorrow I will post something very special to me.  I don’t want to give it away right now, so you’ll have to wait until tomorrow morning.

But even though it will be a personal post, I’ll still share something very practical for you.  Feel free to leave a comment about it too if you like.  And that brings me to my second point.

Are You Shy?

I am beginning to think that the readers of this blog are some of the shyest people on earth.  I’m not trying to be critical; I just want you to feel free to express yourself.  And I’m not saying this because I am looking for compliments; I appreciate them, but that’s not at all the purpose of the ccomment section.

So feel free to express your own opinion whenever you want to, and feel free to comment on what others have to say too.

Have a super weekend, and be sure to stop by tomorrow.

How Much Time Do You Have?

Antique pocket watch - closeup on very old pocket watchI have been busier than I ever have before in my entire life!  And last night I was thinking about time.  How much time do I have in a day?  Then, I thought about some phrases.

Time flies when you’re having fun.  Time waits for no one. The time is right. The time is now.  No time like the present.  Take time to smell the roses. Time will tell.

There are lots and lots of phrases that contain the word, “time.”  When you think about those phrases, it really is just a matter of time. Time doesn’t move faster or slower; time is constant.  There are days when we get more done during the day than other days.  But time is still time.

Time Doesn’t Wait

Have you ever heard the expression, “Time waits for no one?”  It’s true.

I was complaining once about not having “enough time,” and someone told me something I’ve never forgotten.  They said that each day everyone gets a 24 hour suitcase; some just know how to pack better than others.

During the course of a day or a week there are unexpected things that come up.  At times, for one reason or another, there are things that end up taking longer than we anticipated.

What can We Do?

Live your life to the best of your ability at the present moment; at this very moment in time.  That’s all we really can do is to do our best, right now.  Maybe tomorrow or the next day our “best” will be better than the day before.  But for today, at this time, I am just going to try and do my best.

hourglassI hope in reading this that for you it was some time well spent.  But for now, for this post, my time is up.

Why Blame Him?

I’ve been “brewing” on something for a couple of days, so I thought I would get it off my chest this morning before I head to work.

Last week a lady was telling me that at her Church the preacher has been telling the people that the reason the economy is so bad is that God is testing people.  God brings these hardships so that people will turn to Him and trust Him and love Him.

Would any parent consider raising their children like that?  No.  The Bible talks about God as being our Father.  What kind of Father brings hurt, harm and disaster on his children so that they will love him more?

Sometimes I get sick and tired of people blaming God for the foolish choices that people have made.  Why do some preachers keep pushing people down, instead of lifting them up.

So I guess that since God is doing all of these things to “test” us, we should just accept it.  Endure.  Suffer.  That’s the life God wants you to live.  The more you suffer the more you prove your love to Him.

Baloney!

The God of the Bible is a God of love and deliverance.  He is the God Who makes a way when there seems to be no way.  He is the God of endless supply and endless possibilities.  He is the God Who loves us.

Why not look to Him and expect the help and resources that you need?  The promises you read in the Bible have no recession disclaimers attached to them.  What God has promised He is still able and willing to perform when men and women choose to believe Him.

Put your hope and expectation in the God of all creation, whose love for you, the Bible says, nothing can separate you from.  Put your confidence in the God of unlimited power and resources.  Put your trust in the God who has promised to bless you and supply all your need.

Shame on the preachers who blame God for everything and refuse to give people hope.  Read your Bible and believe it or get out of the pulpit.

Get paid To Work Out?

Once again, I’m about to head out to the office for another day of bookkeeping. And I just thought of something a dear friend told me a couple of weeks ago.

Isaac was talking to me about a conversation he had with his daughter.  They were talking about her working. You know, getting a job.  Sometimes for young people, getting their first or second job is a challenge for a number of reasons.

But Isaac told me that he related to her how there was a time when he was working construction and the work was extremely physical.  He was so tired at the end of the day.  But, he did something with his mind concerning his job.

muscleHe simply told himself that they were paying him to exercise!  Isn’t that funny?  Isn’t that kind of cool, though?  He said that he was in great shape because of all the physical work that he was doing, and that these people were paying him to work out every day.

I just thought about that as I was getting ready to go to my job.  Do you know something?  They are paying me to add and subtract numbers.  Imagine that.  I get paid for adding and subtracting.  Well then, bring on the numbers!

What are they paying you to do today?

What’s In Your Fortune Cookie?

I’m about to head out to the office for another day of bookkeeping.  I wanted to post something before I leave.

fortune cookieThe next edition of The Pep Letter comes out tomorrow and the title of the article is, Fortune Cookies And Psychics.  Now that’s an interesting title, isn’t it.

“You will be presented with a great opportunity: don’t pass it up.”  Have you ever read something like that in the little message in a fortune cookie?  I have.  Do you follow the advice and predictions in those?  I don’t.

In the article, I relate how a young lady was disappointed because she didn’t get to ask a psychic a question about her future.  I believe I helped her out a lot more than the prognosticator could have.

The Names Don’t Really Matter

Whether its fortune tellers, crystal balls, tarot cards, palm readers, psychics, horoscopes, or whatever they are being called, the Bible does have something very clear and specific to say about all of this.

The real question is are we going to believe what God says in the Bible about it, or, are we smarter than God?  Gee, do I have to be so blunt about it?  Yes.

By the way, if you’re not a subscriber to my weekly newsletter, called, The Pep Letter, it’s free and there is information in the column to your right.

Enjoy the day, and get your help and direction from God.

Sunday Morning Sneak Preview – 4/25

It has been a very productive weekend so far.  I spent lots of time yesterday studying and writing, and preparing some things for the blog.
bible-3
This morning at our Glendale Fellowship I am going to a little follow up to last weeks teaching on “Hope.”  I am going to share about free will and how it relates to having hope in our God.

Free will to choose is one of the greatest things God has given to every person.  God takes it very seriously.  He will not overstep your free will.  He may try to warn you, but He will never violate your free will to choose.

Remember Gideon?

When the angel first talked to Gideon, he had no hope.  Instead, he was like people who have lost hope; they have no expectations and thus they really don’t exercise their free will to move forward.  They feel stuck where they are and they just can’t seem to move forward.

If we lose hope, then we slowly give up our free will – something that God sees as so very important in our lives.  God would have us to move forward, living our lives, enjoying our lives, making choices and decisions the best that we can, and then looking to Him, with expectations and hope of greater days ahead.

We need to do whatever it takes to rekindle hope in our God, to have expectation in our God.  We ought to remind ourselves of Who God is, what He has done in the past, and, what He can still do today and tomorrow.

So now you have a little preview of what I am going to teach in about an hour.
