Do You Need Help?

In December of 1971 I accepted a new radio job in Panama City, Florida.  We drove there all the way from Denver in our VW Bus.  Kathy’s dad let us use his gas card for the trip and that was very helpful.  We arrived with around forty or fifty dollars.

It was very close to Christmas, and because of the pay cycle, I would not receive my first check until January 10th.  Coincidentally, the owner of the radio station gave everyone a turkey for the holidays.  Little did he know how long we would be eating that bird.

There are times in life when your resources and abilities are not enough at the moment.  We have all found ourselves in situations where we need some help.
Do you need help?

Back in those lean days in Panama City, I didn’t know very much about trusting in God.  Even though I don’t remember specifically, I’m sure I probably prayed. The two of us had a nice turkey dinner, then leftovers, then sandwiches, and finally two or three days of turkey soup.

Are You Looking For Help?

Today, the economic picture is not very good.  There are lots of people who need help.  Sadly, the most viable resource for help seems to be the least talked about today.

Where are people to look for real help?  What are their expectations?  Maybe a better question would be, whom do they choose to rely on, their God, or their government?

It seems more and more people not only look to the government to fix everything, but they also expect the government to provide for them.  Meanwhile the government continues to make more promises. But what about the promises of God: are they really true and valid?

Throughout the Bible you can read promise after promise of God’s desire to provide for those who trust and believe Him.  You can read record after record of Him doing just that time and time again, many times in the most impossible looking situations.  He has not lost any of His power, resources or love.

What The Future Holds

There are those today who do believe that things are about to turn around, and happy days are just around the corner.  Others see darker days on the horizon, with real economic recovery years away.  But whether we are about to see bright days, or whether those days are a long way off, God’s promises have not and will not change.

The principles of prosperity and abundance recorded clearly in the Bible have not changed.  God hasn’t changed.  He is still unlimited in His resources to supply all that we could ever need, and more.  We each have a choice as to where we will put our trust.

As Christians we need to be honest about what we really believe. A person can go to church every Sunday, sing hymns and say all the right phrases. But what is most critical is what you truly believe in your heart of hearts.

Are we as Christians really, “believers” or are we just part of a comfortable organization that makes us feel good?  Do we absolutely and completely trust our God to fulfill His promises for us personally?  The days we live in demand these questions be answered.

Helping Others

There will always be those who cry out to God for help in time of crisis.  Perhaps these trying times have led some to call upon God.  Maybe the reports of greater numbers of people getting saved are because people are looking to trust and believe.

But those of us who have been for some time calling ourselves Christians, and think of ourselves as believers, should be continuing to strengthen our trust in our God.  While others are distraught, we are not only hopeful, but we can offer hope to others.  Some may be worried and afraid, but we are not only confident and trusting, but we can also help others learn to trust God.  While many are stressed out, we can carry His peace and love and be lights in this world.

Being hopeful, confident, trusting, peaceful, and loving are not things that you can just turn on and off.  Those qualities come from conviction in your heart of hearts.  They are a way of life that we choose to live by choosing to accept and believe the Bible.

We can pray for our country and that our government  will make good decisions.  We can ask God to continue to bless our country.  But we also continue to look and pray to our God, believing He will supply our need as He has promised.

Some Quotes:
