What The World Really Needs Now

It’s Another Podcast!

Do you want to hear what I shared last Saturday at the Mission?

Back in the 60’s, Jackie DeShannon had hit song called, “What the World Needs Now is Love.”  Saturday night I taught at the Phoenix Rescue Mission and told them that what the world really needs now, is hope.

Yes, we all still need love, but people need hope today more than ever before.  There are lots of people who are facing what seems like hopeless situations.  Others are losing hope.

In this podcast(45:55), you will hear what I shared with those 80 homeless men.  Find out what hope in God really is, and why it is so important.  Discover how to get hope in God, or how to rekindle hope in God that is no longer there.

It Was More Than Just Graduating

We enjoyed some very happy times over the past few days.  Family and friends celebrated a very special young lady’s high school graduation.  Our niece graduated Thursday evening.

On Wednesday evening we enjoyed an informal family supper at my sister’s house.  Then Friday night there was party our house.

I know lots and lots of kids graduate every year.  But this was a special occasion for more reasons than it just being our niece.  It was more than her having an “A” average, or being the editor of the school yearbook.

Why It Was So Special

It was special for all those reasons, of course.  But it was even more special because of God’s great help and deliverance on her life.  She missed months of school in her junior year.  But, determined, and with God’s help, she regained her strength and finished her junior year the day before her senior year began.

So, obviously we are all very proud of her academic accomplishments and achieving this milestone of graduating high school.  But we are all so very thankful and inspired by her determination, perseverance, and her unwavering trust in our loving God.

Congratulations, Leah!  Continue to put your trust in God.

Dumber Than An Ox?

From the Category, “The Eastern Eye”

[The Bible is an “Eastern” book. It was written many years ago in the “East” which today we refer to as “The Middle East.”  As such, there are many customs and idioms that are not familiar to the “Western” mind.]

There is an expression we use today when referring to someone who is not very smart.  They say that the person is as dumb as an ox.  I don’t know if oxen are really stupid or not.  But there is a place in the Bible where God makes reference to His people saying that they were actually dumber than oxen!

donkeyIn the lands and times of the Bible, in the small villages, early in the morning a young boy would lead the animals out to the fields.  He would go to the different owners of the animals and lead them out to the field to graze.  He would lead the asses from their cribs.   He would lead the cows and oxen from their mangers.

Returning Home

In the evening the young boy, called a “cowboy,” would not bring the animals back to the owners’ crib or manger.  He would simply bring them to the village and let them go.  The cows, asses and oxen would then find their own way to their own master’s crib or manger.

I guess those animals weren’t so dumb after all.  The asses knew where their masters’ crib was and the oxen knew where their masters’ manger was located.  They had the sense to return home.

My People Do Not Know

In the Bible in the book of Isaiah, there is an idiom where God talks about how the ass and ox know where their masters are, but Israel does not know or even consider.  This is certainly far from a compliment.

God is saying, rather bluntly, that His own people have forgotten who their Master is.  They do not even have the sense of an ass or an ox.  Those “dumb” animals knew where their masters were, but God’s own people did not.

Instead of returning to their Master, to God, Israel was putting their trust in other gods.  They had, as the book of Jeremiah states, forsaken God, an unlimited fountain, and built for themselves broken cisterns that can hold no water.

Blistering Reproof

Understanding the culture in the Bible, one can easily see that this verse in Isaiah is a blistering statement of reproof.  God is telling His people that they don’t even have the sense of an ass or an ox.

God is trying to show them very pointedly, using something they are familiar with, that they really ought to remember who God is and how He can provide for them.  If they would remember that, then they wouldn’t need to go chasing after other gods, putting their trust elsewhere, instead of in God.

Our God is a God who provides for His people.  He provides solutions, liberty, peace, joy,donkey-anim healing, abundance, and all that we need.  Those who are complaining and looking for sympathy and pity need to have at least the smarts of an ass and turn to God.

Return To God

Too often people want to have it their own way.  They many times even know what the Word of God says, but they have their own way of doing things; they have their own plan.  They think that they are right and don’t realize that in doing that they are not even as smart as an ox.

But for those who choose to return to God, those who return to the Master, God will indeed provide for them as they put their trust in God.

Isaiah 1:3
The ox knows his owner, and the ass his master’s crib: but Israel does not know, my people do not consider.

Malachi 3:7
Even from the days of your fathers ye are gone away from mine ordinances, and have not kept them.  Return unto me, and I will return unto you, says the LORD of hosts.

Resources
There are a number of books that you can read to get insight on customs, manners, idioms and meanings from the Eastern culture in which the Bible was written.  The best I know of were written by Bishop K. C. Pillai I have had the pleasure of listening to many recorded teaching by him.

He wrote three books, and they are hard to find, and are usually over priced.  But, if you want to you can check this link to see what Amazon has to offer. Light Through an Eastern Window

Another great resource that I have used for years is a book called, “Manners and Customs of the Bible,” by James Freeman. Mine was printed in 1972 and I know they have newer additions. For the newest edition, just click the link and it will take you to Amazon. The New Manners and Customs of the Bible (Pure Gold Classics)

The Lost Message

What Is Pentecost All About?

This Sunday is Pentecost Sunday on the Church calendar.  What exactly do we celebrate? We are told that the celebration is all about commemorating the descent of the holy spirit upon the Apostles.

But could Pentecost be of even greater importance and significance than the birth of Christ?

I don’t normally do this, but for this occasion, I am posting yesterday’s article from The Pep Letter, my weekly newsletter.  I thought it would be some really good information for those who don’t subscribe to The Pep Letter.

What Is The Significance?

In the article below, you will discover the significance of the day of Pentecost spoken of in Acts  2. I believe that the message of Pentecost has been lost. Read and see what you think.

When it comes to Christmas, people understand they are celebrating the birth of Christ.  But when it comes to Pentecost, there are many who wonder what it is really all about.

The Lost Message of Pentecost

When it comes to Pentecost, what exactly do we celebrate? We are told that the celebration is all about commemorating the descent of the holy spirit upon the Apostles.  That event was recorded with a number of details in the book of Acts. But is Pentecost of even greater importance and significance than the birth of Christ?

There are a number of popular celebrations on the Church calendar.  The biggest and most popular is Christmas.  People understand they are celebrating the birth of Christ.  But when it comes to Pentecost, there are many who wonder what it is really all about.

What is the real significance of what occurred to those twelve apostles?  Is it possible that it was the greatest event to date in the history of mankind?  Has the great message of Pentecost been lost?

Ever since the book of Genesis, when man first came on the scene, having body, soul and spirit, there have been a number of events that have affected all of mankind.  Through the centuries there have been hurricanes, tornadoes, earthquakes and volcanoes.  But what happened in the Garden when Adam sinned was the worst disaster for human beings that has ever happened.

Even though there were only two people immediately affected, the consequences would be felt by billions and billions; the consequences would affect every single human being ever born, with the exception of Jesus Christ.

It is because of not understanding what happened when Adam sinned that results in not understanding what happened on the original day of Pentecost.  Adam was told that if he ate of the tree in the midst of the garden he would surely die.  If you are familiar with the record then you know that both Adam and Eve ate of that fruit.

Yet, if you continue reading in the Bible, they both lived for many, many years.  But God had said, “In the day you eat, you will die,” meaning that very day. By taking a closer look one can see that Adam and Eve were formed made and created with two life forms: soul and spirit.

The absence of life is indicated by the word, “death.”  What died that day for Adam and Eve was the spirit life that God intended for all human beings to have.  It is very significant to note that it was the spirit life that enabled them to have a close personal relationship with God.

When they lost spirit life, they still had body and soul life. But they had lost their connection with the Creator.  And, this loss was passed on to all men and women. This was a cataclysmic event, with devastating consequences on all of mankind.

Since very few understand what happened back in the Garden of Eden with Adam and Eve, they fail to see its connection to Pentecost.  But it was after the fall of mankind that God set in motion a plan to redeem mankind.  Because of Adam’s sin, human beings were now incomplete; they were lacking the spirit of God.

During the process of God’s plan, you can read about how God gave certain individuals His spirit on a temporary basis.  But it was not available to any and all human beings.  It took the completed work of Jesus Christ, the savior of mankind, to fulfill all that was necessary.

On that first day of Pentecost, Peter delivered quite a sermon.  It contained a number of references to God’s gift of holy spirit.  He concluded his message by exhorting those listening to change their minds, get baptized, and told them that they too would receive the gift holy spirit.   About 3,000 accepted the invitation.

Jesus taught his followers on many occasions about the coming of holy spirit. It was a major topic at the last Supper.  And after he was resurrected, the first time he got together with his disciples he talks to them about receiving the holy spirit.

On the day of the ascension, right before he left, the very last thing he talked about was about receiving the holy spirit.

If you look closely at Peter’s message on the day of Pentecost, it is filled with information about the spirit of God.

The lost message of Pentecost is the beginning of holy spirit for all of mankind.  That was the day when God officially made His holy spirit available to anyone and everyone.  The reason God wants everyone to have His spirit is so that He can have a close personal relationship just like He had with Adam and Eve in the Garden before the fall.

And while Adam and Eve could and did, lose the spirit of God, this time around, God made it permanent.  He has given us all eternal life which means you cannot lose it.

What a great day in the history of mankind Pentecost was!  God has opened the door for anyone and everyone to receive His gift of holy spirit.  No wonder Peter later referred to that day as, “the beginning.”  Now it is up to us to learn how to utilize and operate this gift of holy spirit that God has freely given us.

We Are Reminded Every Day

sad-faceWhen was the last time you watched or listened to a news report and there was nothing reported about the economy?  Not only do we hear about the economy in every newscast, but in almost every conversation.  We are consistently reminded of how lousy the situation is.

Now if you choose to only focus on that information, you will be pretty discouraged, upset, afraid, angry, etc.  How can you stay positive and trust God when that’s all you hear every single day?

But, on the other hand, we all spend money on a regular basis, don’t we?  And there is a nice little reminder on every piece of currency that we have.  Most of the time we don’t even look at it or think about it.   We just pay the transaction and go on our merry way.

But why not stop and think about it for a moment or two?  “In God We Trust.”  Even if you are writing a check or using a debit card, those things represent money.  We can stop and remind ourselves that our trust is in our God.

Some may choose to continue to put their trust in the in-god-2government.  They will look to Uncle Sam to provide for them.  Everyone makes their own choices.

I would much rather put my trust in my Father, God, than in my Uncle San.  God has a proven track record that is impeccable.  Uncle Sam, well……

That Email Rubbed Me The Wrong Way

It’s Another Podcast!

I always try to respond back when someone sends me an email.  I try to be kind and loving, and teach something, even if the email is critical.

Maybe I should have waited a few days before I responded to this one. I didn’t.  But sometimes I get sick and tired of hearing this same ‘ol song.  So, I kind of unloaded on him.

In this podcast (9:13 ) I’m going to read what he wrote, and then what I emailed back to the man who sent me the email.  I hope you have a comment about this.  There are some Christians who really need to think about their values.  Listen and see what you think.
