The Great Giver

It’s Another Podcast!

I think it is really important to recognize that God is the Great Giver, especially in these uncertain days that we live in.  Do you want to know why?

In this short podcast [15:06], I share some highlights from a teaching I did recently in Scottsdale, Arizona.

A Partridge Not Hatching Her Eggs

From the Category, “The Eastern Eye”

[The Bible is an “Eastern” book. It was written many years ago in the “East” which today we refer to as “The Middle East.”  As such, there are many customs and idioms that are not familiar to the “Western” mind.

In understanding the Scriptures it is important for us to understand the culture, but it doesn’t mean that we should necessarily follow that culture. Rather, it is in the understanding of the Eastern culture that we gain light and understanding about many things in the Bible.]

There are many, many verses in the Bible that talk about money. There are no Scriptures that denounce having wealth.  There are, in fact, many wonderful believers in the Bible who were wealthy.

Those who honestly study the Bible know that it is the love of money that is the root of all evil.  Money itself is not evil.  However, obtaining riches the wrong way is addressed in the Bible.

There is a verse in the book of Jeremiah that uses a partridge to address obtaining riches the wrong way.  The verse talks about a partridge sitting on her eggs, but then not hatching them.  Understanding why the partridge would not hatch the eggs gives great insight about seeking riches the wrong way.

Partridges are birds in the pheasant family.  They are a non-migratory Old World group. They are medium-sized birds, intermediate between the larger pheasants and the smaller quails. Partridges are native to Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Middle East. Partridges are ground-nesting seed-eaters.

Why Would They Not Hatch Their Eggs?

In the lands of the Bible, the partridge would lay its eggs in a small hole in the sand, and then sit on them.  However, they are very skittish, fearful birds.  If they are startled, they will flee and abandon their eggs.

Those who seek to obtain riches the wrong way, by unethical means, such as  using others, will lose those riches.  Just as a partridge will leave her eggs and not return, so shall it be for those who get riches unethically.

Rich People

The Bible says that those who will be rich will fall into many temptations. There will be things that tempt them that those who do not have riches will not be tempted with.  While that is a great caution, it is certainly not an admonition to not be wealthy.

The Bible also talks about instructing those who are rich not to be egotistical and not to trust in riches because those riches are always uncertain.  Instead, like everyone else, they should trust in the living God, who gives us richly all things to enjoy. Those believers who are rich should do good, be rich in good works, ready to distribute, willing to share.

There are those who believe that money is evil and people who have wealth and prosperity need to give it all to those less fortunate.  The Bible teaches that giving of one’s abundance is a choice each one of us makes, and it is not to be compulsory.

I realize there are a number of different positions on the topic of wealth.  The point of this article is not to debate those, but rather to show from the Scriptures that obtaining riches the wrong way will have consequences.   Perhaps we can all agree, and we really should, that God is the Giver and the Supplier.

Jeremiah 17:11
As the partridge sits on eggs, and hatches them not; so he that gets riches, and not by right, shall leave them in the midst of his days, and at his end shall be a fool.

I Timothy 6:9 and 10
But they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition.

For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.

I Timothy 6:17 and 18
Charge them that are rich in this world, that they be not high-minded, nor trust in uncertain riches, but in the living God, who gives us richly all things to enjoy;

That they do good, that they be rich in good works, ready to distribute, willing to communicate;

II Corinthians 9:6-8
But this I say, He who sows sparingly shall reap also sparingly; and he who sows bountifully shall reap also bountifully.

Every man according as he purposes in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loves a cheerful giver.

And God is able to make all grace abound toward you; that you, always having all sufficiency in all things, may abound to every good work:

Deuteronomy 8:18
But you shall remember the LORD your God: for it is He that gives you power to get wealth, that He may establish his covenant which he swore unto your fathers, as it is this day.

Delete

The “delete” key on the computer comes in pretty handy, doesn’t it?  There are also some thoughts that we need to delete as well.

Delete, Delete, Delete!

How many times do you have to hit the “delete” key on your computer when you check your email? Sometimes there are a number of those annoying advertisements all in a row, so it’s, delete, delete, delete. And what about those annoying little “pop-ups” when you go to some web sites? Delete, delete, delete!

The reason we delete the things on our computers is because we don’t want them! They are of no value to us. They are just a waste of time. And, we are also aware that some of them could contain those nasty little viruses, just waiting for us to open them up. Those are a big threat to our computer system.

Pop-ups In Your Mind

There are many times in life that we really need to delete thoughts that “pop up” in our brain. Thoughts that are of no value to us are a waste of time. Other thoughts, if we harbor them, dwell on them, and allow them to incubate, will also negatively affect our lives.

God gave all of us free will. You can choose to think about anything you want to. But, just thinking about anything you want to think about is not the best course of action.

For example, if you think about an unpleasant situation that happened several years ago, dwell on that, and think about all the negative things associated with it, it will trigger some unpleasant memories. Those unpleasant thoughts will then trigger emotions. You will feel unhappy, and your attitude and actions will follow suit. The next thing you know, someone will be saying, “Hey, what’s wrong with you?”

Feelings follow thoughts, and actions follow feelings. Our feelings are a product of our thoughts, and our actions are a product of our feelings.

A Bad Mood

Have you ever been in a bad mood? Or, has someone ever said to you, “I’m just in a bad mood”? Well to hear some people talk, these “bad moods” are just flying around all over the place and every once in awhile, boom, one hits you, and suddenly you’re in a bad mood. Maybe some people are just prone to getting hit by these, because they always seem to be in a bad mood!

A bad mood is a feeling. A good mood is a feeling. And feelings are a result of our thoughts.

Have you ever watched a depressing movie? When it was over, how did you feel? Did you feel light hearted and happy? More than likely you felt gloomy. That’s because you spent some time allowing depressing thoughts into your head.

On the other hand, after watching a comedy that you found to be funny and entertaining, how did you feel? I’m not trying to be critical of depressing movies, nor am I advocating comedy movies. I’m simply making a point of how our brain works.

What Are You Thinking About?

The Bible says that we should guard our hearts with all diligence for out of it (our own heart) are the issues of life (our own life). Do you know that hundreds of books, seminars and courses, are basically based on that one principle from the Book of Proverbs? Just how important are the thoughts we think?

Certainly not every thought you think gets lodged into your heart, just like not every email you receive gets saved. But the thoughts we harbor, dwell on and stay fixed on will eventually get into our hearts.

Someone who consistently day after day see himself as a failure and unsuccessful will be just that: an unsuccessful failure. He is a product of the thoughts that he allowed to get into his heart.  So many people today are negative, and the results they are getting in their lives are negative.

On the other hand, perhaps you’ve noticed that a positive person sticks out like a sore thumb. In fact, when some people encounter a really positive person, they think the positive person might have a screw loose somewhere (not a playing with a full deck, bread not quite baked, out of touch with reality, etc).

But why are some people positive? Are they just born that way? No! We are all a product of our own thoughts. What we have allowed to get into our hearts is what we manifest.

The good news is that you can change what’s in your heart if you really want to. You still have free will. Choose the thoughts you want to keep, and the rest, just delete, delete, delete!

Are You Clear?

You’ve probably heard it said, “Be clear and focused.” I’ve heard it many times; how about you?  But what you are clear and focused on will be the determining factor in what happens in your life.

Are You Clear?

There is something that I have observed for a long time. Think about it and decide if it’s something that you too have observed.

When it comes to problems, shortcomings, failures and all the negative things in life, there are a lot of people who seem to be able to relate and talk about those things in exquisite detail! Even if it’s something that happened in the past, people seem to remember it and repeat it as if it happened only a few minutes ago.

But, if you were to ask these same people where they are headed in life and what the future holds for them, you would usually, at best, get a vague, short answer like, “Oh, just hoping for the best; maybe retire when I’m 65.”

Take a step back for a moment and think about it. What’s wrong with this picture? Why are people eloquent and excited with many very clear details about negative situations, instead of being eloquent and excited with many very clear details about the things that really matter? When it comes to the future of their own lives, why don’t they have a clear vision?

If you have ever wondered why people are so negative, this is the answer. They have trained their minds to focus on negative situations and have chosen to not focus on their future and their unlimited potential for success.

Ever Had A Flat?

Here’s an example: a flat tire. That is certainly not a positive situation. However, one person may not even mention the event, or if he does, it’s just a passing remark, like, “Yeah, had a flat.”

But for someone else, you better look out! You’re going to get a 20 minute story of what happened before the tire went flat, blaming everyone who is at fault over the flat tire, explaining how the tire company doesn’t make tires like they should, and the roads are in such poor shape, and idiots just throw things in the road, and on and on it goes.

Then, after all of that comes the part about the actual changing of the tire and all the negative things that surrounded it. They might say the jack is hard to get to, complain about those lousy lug nuts, tell you about sweating so much out in the heat, and complain that it took so long, and so on. You get the point.

Now, compare all of those negative statements to someone who just says, “Oh yeah, had a flat.”

What You Look At Is What You Become

Constantly focusing on negatives will train your mind to look for and evaluate circumstances and situations from a negative point of view. The glass will always look half empty. But, even more importantly, if you continue to focus on negatives, you will attract more negatives into your life.

So, what kind of future can you expect? The results that you receive will depend on whatever you are consistently focusing on, either negative or positive. Your future is your choice.

Instead of getting wrapped up in all the negatives around you, get a clear picture of where you want your life to go. Call it your goals, dreams or whatever you like. Just be sure to have a picture so clear in your mind that you could describe it to others with great passion and in great detail.

Remind yourself daily of exactly what you desire. Repeat that specific desire to yourself every day, with passion and emotion! Keep the picture crystal clear.

There will always be “flat tires.” Deal with them, forget them, and move on. Why waste your brain power thinking about negative situations that are already over and done with? Instead, focus on the positive things around you.

Do whatever you need to do to keep your vision alive by keeping the focus of your desires crystal clear.

Ten Years Later…

Remembering…

”Did you stand there in shock at the sight of that black smoke, rising against that blue sky? Did you shout out in anger, in fear for your neighbor, or did you just sit down and cry?”

Two years ago, I posted this video on 9/11.  I mentioned on that post that  I’ve watched a lot of videos about 9/11 on YouTube and most of them have pictures or video from that horribly tragic day. You have probably watched some as well.

But I still think this song by Alan Jackson, Where Were You When the World Stopped Turning? says so much that I decided to post it again.

I know there are some who feel we need forget that day and move on. But I believe for those who senselessly lost their lives that day, for the friends and families who lost loved ones, and for the brave men and women who were true heroes that day, we ought to remember.

Alan first performed this song at the Country Music Association’s annual awards show on November 7, 2001. It became the single of the year as well as the song of the year for 2001.

A Little Background About the Song

Speaking of the song, Jackson said, ”I’m sure there are people who criticize it, but I wrote what I felt; I didn’t premeditate anything. I’m just a singer of simple songs, and that’s the truth. And I don’t know the difference in Iran and Iraq. And some people that aren’t real religious probably don’t want to hear it, and that’s all right. I didn’t sit down to heal the world or anything.”

The story goes that he sat upright in bed one night in late October with most of it in his head. ”After the 11th, I was pretty disturbed, like most people. For a few weeks I thought about writing something. I’m sure a lot of people who write songs felt the same way, but I didn’t want to write a patriotic thing and couldn’t think of anything that didn’t feel like you’d be taking advantage of it commercially.

So I didn’t think anything else about it, to be honest.” But that night, the melody, opening lines, and chorus came to him. “I went downstairs in my underwear and put this thing down so I wouldn’t forget it the next morning.”

”It’s been overwhelming, the response to it, and a little scary, really, for me,” I’ve had so many people come up to me, and I don’t know what to say, other than that I just feel like it was a gift from God. I don’t know why He picked me to send those words to, but I’m glad it’s been a healing song for some people.”

And so, on this the 10th anniversary of that horrible day, I think his song is still very healing.

Paul’s Girdle

From the Category, “The Eastern Eye”

[The Bible is an “Eastern” book. It was written many years ago in the “East” which today we refer to as “The Middle East.”  As such, there are many customs and idioms that are not familiar to the “Western” mind.

In understanding the Scriptures it is important for us to understand the culture, but it doesn’t mean that we should necessarily follow that culture. Rather, it is in the understanding of the Eastern culture that we gain light and understanding about many things in the Bible.]

There is a very interesting event that is recorded in Acts 21. The Apostle Paul was staying in Caesarea at the home of Philip the Evangelist.  Paul was on a journey to Jerusalem.

A prophet from Judea, named Agabus, came to the house with a message for Paul.  However, the message he had for Paul was given to him in a rather dramatic fashion.  Agabus took Paul’s girdle, bound his own hands and feet, and then told Paul, “Thus says the Holy Ghost, So shall the Jews at Jerusalem bind the man that owns this girdle, and shall deliver him into the hands of the Gentiles.”

What was Paul’s “girdle?”  We would call it a belt, or a sash or a cord.  In many cases in Bible times, it was hollow, so the girdle served not only to secure flowing garments but also to carry money in.

There are other records in the Bible that show prophets delivering a message in a very dramatic way adding to their words something very visual.  Isaiah, Ezekiel and others used this form of communication to call attention, to give a distinct and impressive idea of the subject, and, by engaging the imagination, to fix it in the memory.

What Was The Will Of God

So was Paul not supposed to go to Jerusalem?  Was he wrong in going?  Did he disobey God’s specific instructions?

Just a few days before arriving at Philip’s house, Paul was in the city of Tyre.  While he was there, some disciples told Paul, through or by way of the Spirit, that he should not go to Jerusalem.

In the previous chapter, you can read of Paul getting information from God that if he went to Jerusalem, bonds and afflictions were waiting for him.  God had warned him.  Yet, Paul was determined to go to Jerusalem.

It is also very clear in Chapter 20 that it was Paul who decided to go to Jerusalem.  It says that he determined to not go to Ephesus so that he could be in Jerusalem at the day of Pentecost.  He was the one who decided to go to Jerusalem.

While in Miletus, he told them that he was going to Jerusalem, but that he was bound in the sprit.  He was not free in the spirit, but rather he was bound.  He even told them that God was revealing to him every day the consequences that would happen if he indeed went to Jerusalem.

So he proceeded on his journey.  In Tyre, disciples told him by way of the Spirit not to go to Jerusalem.  Then, the prophet Agabus gives Paul a message from God in a very dramatic fashion.  The will of God for Paul is very clear.

The Conflict Over The Commas

Most Christians do not want to admit that Paul made a mistake by going to Jerusalem.  So they ignore all the clear verses that show how God is trying to keep Paul out of Jerusalem, and instead focus on one verse, and let a punctuation mark settle the argument.

After all the daily warnings from God to Paul, as well warnings from others by way the spirit telling him not to go, then comes the dramatic warning from Agabus.  Those who saw and heard what Agabus did began to cry and beg Paul not to go.

Paul’s reaction was very courageous.  He asked them why they were crying and breaking his heart.  He then told them he was not only ready to be bound at Jerusalem, but also to die.

Paul was very committed. His response to them at Phillip’s house sounds very courageous, but what good could Paul do for God if he were dead?  How hindered would his ministry be if indeed he were bound as Agabus had foretold?

But alas, the next verse has a comma or two that many people use to “prove” that Paul going to Jerusalem was really the will of God.  The verse, in the King James Version, says, “And when he would not be persuaded, we ceased, saying, The will of the Lord be done.”  I don’t want to argue about commas, especially because in the original texts, there were no commas.

Adjusting the commas in that verse, or, even ignoring them, it could very easily read, “And when he would not be persuaded we ceased saying the will of the Lord be done.”  In other words, Paul was not to be persuaded, so we stopped saying what the will of the Lord was.

Ignoring the many verses that clearly show what the will of the Lord was, and then using a comma or two to try and prove a point is a dishonest handling of the Scriptures.

Foretelling The Future

What Agabus foretold did indeed come to pass.  That is the measure of a true prophet: what they declare will happen, does indeed happen.  If it doesn’t come to pass, the Scriptures say to pay no attention to that prophet.

Today there are many voices coming from many places that are predicting and foretelling the future.  Especially in reference to the worldwide economic crisis, you hear people making their predictions every day.  Who are you listening to?

I do not claim to be a prophet; I am not predicting the future.  But, like many, many people, I do believe there are some very serious days ahead before things can ever begin to turn around.  And, I also know that our God is a very personal God.

Look at how God tried to get through to the Apostle Paul to save him from serious trouble.  God did so much to keep him from going to Jerusalem.  But, God did not overstep Paul’s free will.

God can give you guidance for your life, especially in these treacherous days that we live in.  God’s love for you, just like His love for Paul, is unconditional and nothing can ever separate you from His love.  But remember, God will not overstep your free will.

Put your confidence in God.  Pay attention to His still small voice.  Never be afraid to shift your direction for His direction.

Dueteronomy 18:22
When a prophet speaks in the name of the LORD, if the thing follow not, nor come to pass, that is the thing which the LORD has not spoken, but the prophet has spoken it presumptuously: you shall not be afraid [have reverence or regard] of him.

Acts 20:15 and 16
And we sailed there, and came the next day over against Chios; and the next day we arrived at Samos, and tarried at Trogyllium; and the next day we came to Miletus.

For Paul had determined to sail by Ephesus, because he would not spend the time in Asia: for he hasted, if it were possible for him, to be at Jerusalem the day of Pentecost.

Acts 20:22-24
And now, behold, I go bound in the spirit unto Jerusalem, not knowing the things that shall befall me there:

Save that the Holy Ghost witnesses in every city, saying that bonds and afflictions abide me [if I go there].

But none of these things move me, neither count I my life dear unto myself, so that I might finish my course with joy, and the ministry, which I have received of the Lord Jesus, to testify the gospel of the grace of God.

Acts 21:3 and 4
Now when we had discovered Cyprus, we left it on the left hand, and sailed into Syria, and landed at Tyre: for there the ship was to unlade her burden.

And finding disciples, we tarried there seven days: who said to Paul through the Spirit, that he should not go up to Jerusalem.

Acts 21:8-15
And the next day we that were of Paul’s company departed, and came unto Caesarea: and we entered into the house of Philip the evangelist, which was one of the seven; and abode with him.

And the same man had four daughters, virgins, which did prophesy.

And as we tarried there many days, there came down from Judaea a certain prophet, named Agabus.

And when he was come unto us, he took Paul’s girdle, and bound his own hands and feet, and said, Thus says the Holy Ghost, So shall the Jews at Jerusalem bind the man that owns this girdle, and shall deliver him into the hands of the Gentiles.

And when we heard these things, both we, and they of that place, besought him [Paul] not to go up to Jerusalem.

Then Paul answered, What mean you to weep and to break mine heart? for I am ready not to be bound only, but also to die at Jerusalem for the name of the Lord Jesus.

And when he would not be persuaded, we ceased, saying, The will of the Lord be done.

And after those days we took up our carriages, and went up to Jerusalem.

The Persistent Decision

#7 I Will Persist

Today’s short podcast [5:40] is the seventh and final decision of this series.  You might want to listen to the first podcast of this series to get a little more background.

If you have read the book, The Traveler’s Gift by Andy Andrews, then you’ll recognize these. If you haven’t read the book, but would like a copy of these seven decisions, Andy offers a free printed download on his site, AndyAndrews.com.  (You’ll find the download towards the bottom on the right hand side.)

This decision on persistence is applicable in all areas of life.  Whether you refer to it as, “stay the course,” or, “don’t quit,” or even, “hang in there,” the message is the same.  There is reward for those who persist.

These seven decisions are powerful.  They are confronting.  They are not for whiners; they are for those who really want to be responsible and take charge of their own lives.  So, if you’re ready to pursue your dream, go ahead and click the play button!

The Forgiveness Decision

#6 I Will Forgive

Today’s short podcast [5:39] is the sixth of seven decisions.

This decision on forgiveness can change your life.  Far too many overlook the forgiveness that is so clear in the Scriptures, and as a result they fail to reap the tremendous personal rewards that come from accepting forgiveness and from forgiving others.

These seven decisions are powerful.  They are confronting.  They are not for whiners; they are for those who really want to be responsible and take charge of their own lives.  So, if you’re ready to pursue your dream, go ahead and click the play button!

The Joyful Decision

#5 I Will Choose To Be Happy

Today’s short podcast [5:11] is the fifth of seven decisions.

These seven decisions are powerful.  They are confronting.  They are not for whiners; they are for those who really want to be responsible and take charge of their own lives.  So, if you’re ready to pursue your dream, go ahead and click the play button!
