ARE YOU AFRAID?

Some Very Practical Insight On Getting Rid Of Fear In Your Life!

I recently learned something very interesting and very practical from the Bible concerning fear. More on that in just a few minutes. Let’s consider some of what God’s Word has to say about fear.

There is a great truth about God’s perspective concerning fear in Psalm 34. It says in verse 4, “I sought the Lord and He heard me and delivered me from all my fears.” Some popular psychology of our day propounds that we need to live with our fears. If we are supposed to just accept and live with our fears, why doesn’t that verse say, “I sought the Lord and He heard me and told me to just live with my fears?” The will of God is clear; God desires to deliver us from all our fears.

Proverbs 29:25 says, “The fear of man brings a snare: but whoso putteth his trust in the LORD shall be safe.” A snare is a trap. In I John 4, it says that fear has torment. Having fear does not help us; fear brings torment and it entraps us.

After the crucifixion of Jesus Christ the disciples were behind closed doors for fear of the Jews. Fear, like worry and doubt, greatly interferes with our believing the promises of God.

Be Not Afraid, Only Believe!

You may be familiar with the record in Mark, Chapter 5. A man came to Jesus asking him to come and lay his hands on his dying daughter so that she could be healed. Jesus went with him, but along the way someone came and told that man it was too late, his daughter had died. As soon as Jesus heard those words he told that man, “Be not Afraid, only believe.”

This brief discussion about fear in this article is not about being in a field somewhere and seeing a bull coming your way and just saying, “I’m not afraid.” Of course not! You would get over the fence in a hurry!

And I’m also not referring to jumping off a cliff saying, “I’m not afraid, God will protect me because it says in His Word that He gives His angels charge over me; they will bear me up in their hands so that I won’t dash my foot against a stone.” Doing something foolish like that would certainly be tempting God.

I’m talking about fear that comes up due to circumstances and situations that we may face in our lives. Fear is not something that God wants us to just accept and live with. His desire is to deliver us from all our fears. Living with fear is a snare, it is torment, it is bondage. Fear keeps you from enjoying your life and it greatly hinders you from believing the promises of God.

There are lots of things today that people are afraid of: fear of losing their job, fear of getting into an accident, fear of an illness or recurring illness, fear of a lack of finances, and the list goes on and on.

In the second epistle of Timothy we find out that for those of us who are born again, “God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.” When a person accepts Jesus Christ as their lord and believes God raised him from the dead, the Bible says you are saved. A saved person, one who is born again, receives God’s spirit. and that spirit God gives us is not a spirit of fear, but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.

Fear happens in the mind. And at times we have to honestly ask ourselves, “What am I afraid of?” And when we recognize we have fear, what do we want to do about it?

I Learned Something Very Practical

in Reading David Bergey’s new book, 100 Scriptures to Help you Recover your Health, I learned something very practical concerning what God says about fear. While there are numerous places in the bible where God talks about not being afraid, in many of those places God tells us why we should not be afraid.

In the first chapter of the Book of Joshua, God is instructing Joshua to take the children of Israel into the Promised Land. Moses died and now Joshua was in charge. I can’t begin to fathom the weight on Joshua’s shoulders with such a responsibility.

But God not only told him to be strong and very courageous, but He told him why. God said, “Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.” Joshua was not alone – God was with him!

In Psalm 23, it says, “Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.” We are not alone! Even if you are “walking through the valley of the shadow of death,” which is a pretty scary place to be walking through, but if you are, like the Psalmist said, “I will fear no evil, for Thou art with me.” God is with you with His rod and staff.

In Psalm 46 it talks about not being afraid even if the mountains are falling into the sea and the earth is removed! Talk about being in a dramatic scenario and not being afraid! But why? It says because God is our refuge and strength and He is a very present help in trouble.

God Is Present!

God is not distant, far far away somewhere; He is present. He told Joshua I am with you; in Psalm 23 it says, Thou art with me, and in Psalm 46 it says He is present. We are not alone; He is here with us!

Many times in God’s Word you won’t read verses that say, “Don’t Be Afraid, don’t have any fear, just suck it up and be brave! Just be positive!” But rather, you read verses that say to fear not, because God is with you!

My favorite two verses about fear are in Isaiah 41, verses 10 and 13:

Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of My righteousness.

For I the LORD thy God will hold thy right hand, saying unto thee, Fear not; I will help thee.

God repeatedly says to not be afraid, because, “I am with you!”

His Spirit Is In Us!

Ephesians 4 tells us there is one God and Father of us all, “Who is above all and through all, and in you all.” God is in us by way of the spirit, His spirit that he put in us. Are we alone? Absolutely not! And in those times when you feel all alone, remind yourself that you are not alone, God is in you!

In Philippians it says that God works in you both to will and to do of His good pleasure. Are we alone? Absolutely not! And what is His good pleasure? It is certainly not to live in fear, but rather to help us, to strengthen us, to bless us, to be a very present help in time of trouble!

In Romans 8 chapter 11, there is a very wonderful verse regarding healing. “But if the spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, He that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by His spirit that dwelleth in you.” When it comes to sickness, fear not! Why? His spirit in you shall also quicken, make alive your mortal body!

In Acts 27, Paul was on a ship that was battered by a typhoon, and eventually, after many days, all hope was gone. But then Paul came and told them to be of good cheer, that no one was going to die. Why in the world would he tell those people who knew they were all about to die, to be of good cheer? Was he just some nutcase trying to be positive? “Okay everybody, let’s all just be positive here.”

He told them to be of good cheer because God sent an angel who told Paul, “Fear not, Paul… God hath given thee all them that sail with thee.” Paul then told them, “Wherefore, sirs, be of good cheer: for I believe God, that it shall be even as it was told me.” Once again, as you see in so many other places in God’s Word, when the message is to not be afraid, the reason why is given.

For you and me, in those times when we are having fear, we ought to focus on the great truth that we are not alone. God is with us, and in reality, God is in us by way of His spirit that is in us. He truly is present with us; He will strengthen us, He will help us, He will heal us, He will restore us, and He will protect us!

You are not alone!

Your loving God and Father will take you by the right hand saying to you, “Fear not, I will help you!”

ARE YOU AFRAID?

You Don’t Have To Live With Fear!

In the summer of 1989, I said, very positively, “I’m not afraid; I’m trusting God.” I had taught many times on not being afraid, had counseled countless people about trusting God and not being afraid. And now it was my turn to face fear.

It’s actually very easy to simply say, “I’m not afraid.” It’s easy to just say the words and act “positive.” But just saying, “I’m not afraid,” doesn’t mean you’re not allowing fear to direct your life.

It’s also easy to trust God when everything is going well. But when a storm in life hits you right in the face, it can bring doubts, uncertainty, worry, and fear. This wasn’t the first time or the last time I had to decide I was either going to allow fear to direct my life, or trust God for His help.

The Gates Of Hell

From the Category, “The Eastern Eye”

[The Bible is an “Eastern” book.  It was written many years ago in the “East” which today we refer to as “The Middle East.”  As such, there are many customs and idioms that are not familiar to the “Western” mind.]

gate-1The expression, “gates of hell” occurs only once in the Scriptures.  The context in which Jesus uses that expression is very interesting.  He had asked his disciples who people were saying that he was.  Finally, he asked them, “But who do you say that I am?”

Simon Peter answered immediately and said, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”  Jesus Christ commented that flesh and blood didn’t reveal that to Peter, but instead, the Father in heaven.

Jesus then went on to say that you are Peter (a small stone), and, upon this rock (large unmovable stone,) I will build my church and the “gates of hell” shall not prevail against it.  Christ’s church is not built upon a man, but upon Christ himself.  (We’ll save that debate for another time.)

Jesus then said that the “gates of hell” would not prevail against his church. Since that phrase, “gates of hell” is only used once in the scriptures, it makes it very, very unique.  Are these literal gates?  How many gates are there?  What is “hell?”

What Is Hell?

In this verse, the word “hell” is translated from the Greek word, hades.  Hades means the grave, death, or you could even say, “gravedom.”  It has nothing to do with burning in a fire somewhere.  In fact, in Acts 2 it says that Jesus was not left in hades.  He died and was buried, and thus was in hades, but God raised him from the dead.

So again, are these “gates of hell” figurative or literal?  They obviously cannot be literal gates.  There are no physical gates that lead to death.  One could take the position that since Christ came to bring eternal life, nothing shall prevail against that eternal life.  Even those who have died believing in Christ will not stay in the grave permanently, but will, when he returns, be resurrected.  (See John 3:16 Compilation)

E.W. Bullinger noted that the word “gates” is the figure of speech metonymy, The figure of speech metonymy is when the name of one thing is used in place of another that is suggested by or associated with it.  Thus, “gates” represents power.  Even the power of the grave will not prevail against Christ’s church.

It must be understood that Christ’s church is neither a gate-2building nor a denomination.  His church is comprised of those who believe in Christ, and Ephesians states that Christ is the head of the church.

However, Bishop K.C. Pillai believed that there was an even deeper truth in this passage.  He taught that this phrase, “gates of hell,” had a specific philosophical meaning to the people in the lands and times of the Bible.

worried-female-2

He said that there are actually three gates: fear, worries, and anxiety.  Even today in our western world, each of those three have been associated with death, figuratively and idiomatically.  For example, “scared to death,” and, “worried to death,” are both common phrases in our culture. In addition, people have died due to a nervous breakdown.  Fear, worries, and anxiety can take a tremendous toll on the physical body.

Shall Not Prevail

Jesus said that the “gates of hell” shall not prevail against his church.  Why then are followers of Christ overcome with fears, worries and anxiety?  Jesus also said that those who believe in him shall do the works that he did.  Not all believers are doing the works that he did.  It is not automatic, but it is available.

worried-male-2

Jesus Christ is the “rock.”  He is the way, the truth and the life.  By believing in Christ one obtains eternal life and is made righteous.  For the one believing in Christ, fears, worries and anxiety may confront him, but cannot prevail against that person.  In other words, if your mind is on the “rock,” Christ Jesus, and what he accomplished for you, then fears, worries and anxiety will not prevail against you.

Why Are Some Christians Living With Fears, Worries, And Anxieties?

There are Christians who seem to be dominated by fears, worries and anxiety.  Why worried-female-3is that? The privileges and abilities we have received by believing in Christ are not automatic in our lives.

The Bible declares that it is Christ in us and that we can do all things through Christ who strengthens us.  Therefore, by our free will choice, we can refuse to allow fears, worries and anxieties to prevail against us.  We choose to believe who God has made us.

Fears, worries and anxiety may confront us, but they are not supposed to prevail against us.  He that is in you is greater than he that is in the world.  We have been given the ability to be more than conquerors in all situations.

worried-male-3Jesus Christ is the master, and the Bible tells us that it is Christ in us.  Therefore when it comes to fears, worries, and anxiety, we don’t allow those to dominate us.  But instead, we are masters over our lives by the strength of the Christ in us.

One of the main reasons that so many Christians are being overcome by fears, worries and anxieties is because they do not believe or accept who God has made them to be as a born again one.   According to the Bible, we can be victorious in all situations in life!

Nothing Changes?

What good is it to become a born again Christian and receive eternal life if nothing in this life changes?  Some teach that we are to just suffer for the Lord, and be patient and endure; after all, this life is supposed to be a struggle and that’s what Christians can expect.

Those who preach that kind of message must certainty have a confident-femalelot of pages missing from their Bibles!  Yes, we have indeed been given eternal life, but what about this life we live now?  The Bible declares that it is Christ in us, the hope of glory, that we are more than conquerors, that we can do all things through Christ who strengthens us and, that greater is he that is in us than he that is in the world.

Smiling African American businessmanFears, worries and anxiety may certainly confront us, but it is up to us to determine that we will believe who the Bible says that we are, and choose to accept that we can do what the Bible says that we can do.  As a born again one, we are part of Christ’s church, and he declared that the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.

Matthew 16:15-18
He said unto them, But whom say you that I am?

And Simon Peter answered and said, You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.

And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed are you, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood has not revealed it unto you, but my Father who is in heaven.

And I say also unto thee, That you art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.

Acts 2:31
He seeing this before spoke of the resurrection of Christ, that his soul was not left in hell, neither his flesh did see corruption.

I John 4:4
Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.

Colossians 1:27
To whom God would make known what [is] the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you, the hope of glory:

Philippians 4:13
I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.

Romans 8:31-39
What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us?

He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things?

Who shall lay any thing to the charge of God’s elect? It is God who justifies.

Who is he that condemns? It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also makes intercession for us.

Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?

As it is written, For thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter.

Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us.

For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come,

Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Resources
There are a number of books that you can read to get insight on customs, manners, idioms and meanings from the Eastern culture in which the Bible was written.  The best I know of were written by Bishop K. C. Pillai I have had the pleasure of listening to many recorded teaching by him.

He wrote three books, and they are hard to find, and are usually over priced.  But, if you want to you can check this link to see what Amazon has to offer. Light Through an Eastern Window

Another great resource that I have used for years is a book called, “Manners and Customs of the Bible,” by James Freeman. Mine was printed in 1972 and I know they have newer additions. Coach Carter

Last night Kathy and I watched the movie, “Coach Carter. We have seen it several times before.  It is a really an inspiring movie, based on the true story of Coach Ken Carter, in Richmond California.

There is a great quote near the end of the movie.  The quote is from a poem by Marianne Williamson.

Even though the quote in the movie was very inspiring, there were some lines that the movie script left out from the original poem.  So, below, first, the quote from the movie, and then, the actual poem from Marianne Williamson.

From the movie, Coach Carter:

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.

It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us.

Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you.

We are all meant to shine as children do. It’s not just in some of us; it is in everyone.

And as we let our own lights shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.

From the poem, Our Greatest Fear, by Marianne Williamson:

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.

It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?

Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God.

Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you.

We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It’s not just in some of us; it’s in everyone.

And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.

Opposite Thoughts

You’ve probably heard the question, “What are you thinking about?”  But have you ever wondered how many thoughts you actually think?  Scientific research varies on estimtes from 12,000 to 50,000 thoughts per day.  But, there is something that you cannot think about!

In this article I am going to show you just how magnificent the human mind is by asking you to do something with your mind that you cannot do. I’ve tried it and I can’t do it.  In fact there is no one on the planet that can do it.

I’ll explain more in a few minutes.

What you focus on in your mind will always set the course for your life, whether it is positive or negative, success or failure, victory or defeat.  Amazingly, few people know and understand this and even fewer believe it.  Believe it or don’t believe it; the battle will always take place in the mind.

Thoughts Are Seeds

I like to think of thoughts as seeds.  Seeds have a planting and germinating process. If they are planted and nourished, they will grow and produce. This is true with weed seeds too.

Just because a negative thought comes into your mind doesn’t mean you need to harbor that thought and entertain it.  You can simply dismiss it, like pulling a weed out. Or, you can choose to keep it and let it settle in.

Now, consider opposites.  How do you get rid of darkness?  Simply by introducing light.  Light and darkness are opposites. The same is true with cold and heat.  Hot and cold are opposites, just as light and darkness are opposites.   One replaces or neutralizes the other.

Try This Experiment

Now when it comes to our thinking and our thoughts, we just cannot think two opposite thoughts at the same time.  Have you ever tried?  If not, here’s an experiment you can do right now.

tall-buildingPicture a building in your mind.  Make this building a very, very tall building and, at the same time, make this building a very short building.  You can’t do it!

You cannot picture the same building as a very tall building and a very short building at the same time.  That’s because tall and short are opposites.

Want to try another?

Picture a car at a racetrack going one-hundred and fifty miles an hour and at the same time see the car going twenty miles and hour.  You cannot picture it because fast and slow are opposites.42-15599538

You cannot hold two opposite thoughts in your mind at the same time. One will simply overwrite the other.  That is how the Creator designed our brains to work.

This Gives Us A Great Advantage!

The thoughts that you hold in your mind are the thoughts that you are planting and nourishing, and they will grow.  The question is, “What kind of crop do you want to harvest?”

Get busy planting and nourishing the seeds that you want to harvest. If a farmer wants to harvest wheat and corn, does he just sit around all day and do nothing, and then hope that maybe someday he could harvest some wheat and corn?  No.  He plants seeds and nourishes them.

972948What kind of seeds does he plant?  Wheat and corn, of course!  It’s so simple and so very obvious in so many categories of life.  And, it works just as accurately and precisely in our minds.

You must decide what you truly desire, and then start planting and nourishing the seed. When those destructive, negative, defeating thoughts pop in, drive them out, by replacing them with what you do desire.

It’s Your Choice

Your thoughts will truly bring to you courage or discouragement; success or failure; confidence or fear.  It is always in your own power to choose which thoughts you will hold in your mind. Changing your thinking is absolutely required if you want to change your circumstances.

God gave us all free will.  You can choose to think whatever thoughts you want to think.  But remember, you are and you will be a product of the thoughts that you have planted and nourished.  The Bible says, “As he thinks in his heart so is he.”
