Back To School – Review

Alpha Omega Publications Home School Products

You probably know someone involved one way or another with “homeschooling.”  I do as well. There are many dedicated and hardworking parents who have chosen this option for their children.  It takes commitment. school-son-dad

There are a number of places to get supplies for homeschooling.  I recently checked out Alpha Omega One of their two offices is right here in Arizona, in Chandler, which is a suburb of Phoenix. The other is in Rock Rapids, Iowa.

I Called Them Up

I called up Alpha Omega in Chandler and talked to Nancy for awhile.  Very nice lady. Alpha Omega Publications has been around for over 30 years helping families by offering them quality educational materials that promote Christian values. They have provided thousands of families with exceptional, Christian home school curriculum, learning resources, and educational services.

TV News

Have you watched a lot of TV news lately? 42-17253129 It’s not very encouraging, is it?  Well, in fact, it is pretty depressing. I don’t watch a lot of TV news, but when I do it is filled with gloom and doom and predictions of more gloom and doom.

Now with a background in broadcasting, I know all too well that the news has never been designed to be positive and uplifting.  There’s an old saying in journalism, “If it bleeds, it leads.”  That means the story that contains the most dramatic negative elements in it is usually the lead story.

But how do you feel after watching the TV news?  If you’re like me, you don’t feel happy and elated or encouraged and inspired, do you?

Are You A Reporter?

So much of what has happened here in the United States in the last 10 months has led many to criticize, blame, and condemn.  Many people are re-reporting to others what they heard on the TV news:  “Did you hear what happened now?  Do you know what they are trying to do?”

Now I am not saying we have no problems, because we certainly do.  My head is not in the sand.  But, there is some other news that you can choose to focus on rather than the TV news.  You can put your focus on the Good News.

I believe that regardless of circumstances and situations, no matter how big they may seem, the promises of God are still true.  And God will bring His promises to pass for those who choose to believe Him.

Why Are They In There?

bible-1The Bible is not only full of God’s promises of help, deliverance, healing, and prosperity, but you can also read many accounts of people facing very adverse and even impossible circumstances who received His deliverance.  Have you ever wondered why those accounts are in the Bible?

I’m not talking about the obvious and most memorable ones, like the children of Israel crossing the Red Sea.  You have to admit, that was a pretty adverse and seemingly impossible situation.  The odds were certainly stacked against them with the Egyptian army on this side, and the Red Sea on that side.  But God came up with a remarkable solution.

And there are of course other memorable accounts, but what about some of those that are less familiar, and more personal?  For example, the woman with two sons, whose husband died, leaving them with unpaid debts?  It was bad enough in that culture to be a widow, let alone to have debt.

This was a seemingly impossible or hopeless situation.  According to the culture, her two sons would be taken to work off the whole debt.  But again, God came up with a solution that not only allowed the woman to pay all of her debts, but have enough for she and her two sons to live on.

How Bad Is A Famine?

What about living through a famine?  A famine is about 100 times worse than a downturn economy.  A woman and her son were about to eat their final meal and then just die.  But, once again, God brought a tremendous solution.

So, again, my question is why are those records of deliverance in the Bible?  Why are there numerous accounts of God’s help and deliverance against all odds in adverse and seemingly impossible situations?  Are they there just to entertain us?  Or, are they written to inspire us and encourage us to have confidence in God?

In my own life there have been many times when it looked like the “odds were all stacked against me.”  Those situations were very real.  Perhaps you have been in situations where you were discouraged and felt like giving up.  I certainly have.

A Really Big Key

But I have learned a big key is where I keep my mind. Where do I choose to put my mental focus? I can look at my present reality and accept it, and then project a very negative outcome as a result of where things are right now.

Or, I can take a different approach.  I can look at what God has promised me, and keep my focus on what He has said.  I can look to Him for solutions.  Instead of expecting things to get worse, I can choose to expect things to get better, regardless of what is going on around me.

We all choose what thoughts we think.  The TV news will not encourage you or build your confidence in God. But the Good News will. And when it comes to the economy, here is something to keep in mind.  In fact, you can remind yourself of it every time you spend money.  On every piece of currency we still have the words, “In God We Trust.”

in_god_we_trust

Some may choose to immerse themselves in all that the TV news is reporting, and then hope that somehow the government will take care of all their problems.  I choose to accept the Good News, and believe His promises of prosperity. I choose to trust in God.

Christian Merchandise – Review

ChristianGear.com

Has this ever happened to you?  You want to buy some kind of Christian item for yourself or someone else, but you can’t find what you want on the item.hat-3-16

Yesterday I told my wife Kathy about a web site I found called,  Christian Gear. When I told her what you can do on that site, she said, “You don’t know how many times I’ve tried to buy something for someone and the item just didn’t have exactly what I wanted on it.”  Has that ever happened to you?

I too have been in Christian gift shops looking for a T-shirt, or a mug, or something for someone and more often than not, I just could not find what I was really looking for.  The item didn’t have the verse I wanted on it, or, I didn’t like the picture, or the art work.  Well, now you can design it yourself, online.  I did. I’ll tell you about that in a minute.

One Of The Largest

Christian Gear. is one of the largest producers of custom made Christian merchandise on the internet. They do their own in house embroidery, screen printing, glassware printing and banners! Fast, quality merchandise with no middle man.mug

They carry over 600 gift items such Christian apparel, hip Christian t-shirts, Christian shirts, fun Christian items, religious stuff, religious apparel, religious merchandise, hats and cups and lots more.

With millions upon millions of customers going to their website and having an almost unlimited supply of custom products, Christian Gear is fast becoming the largest online source for Christian and Religious merchandise.

Their Mission Statement

Our mission is to provide the easiest way for Christians to buy merchandise on the web. We think the Internet ought to be fun and that shopping should be as fast and convenient as shopping for anything else on the Internet. We are making a personal commitment to every customer that Christian Gear will be the best source for all of their Christian needs.

What They Promise

  • They promise that you will discover the largest selection of Christian merchandise available anywhere.
  • The best customer service in the industry.
  • You will receive your order lightening fast.
  • You will get the best value offered anywhere, guaranteed.
  • They have more Christian Inventory then anybody

But One Thing Is Missing

I spent quite a bit of time looking around on their site, and the one thing I didn’t like was that they don’t promote their “Design Your Own” features in a big way on their Home page.  Wow, this feature is very cool! You can design your own Christian gifts, clothing and lots more!  And it is so easy.

I actually designed a T-shirt with text and a picture imported from my files, in less than five minutes!  Pick the color; pick the text; type the text; import a picture if you want; position everything and you’re done.  Then you pick the size and quantity.  It is really that simple.

Now obviously, if your quantity is more, the price is lower, but I just picked “one.”  The price was under $25 and that was for a T-shirt that had exactly what I wanted on it, and in the color I wanted.

I tried to copy/paste my final design, so I could show it to you here on the blog, but I couldn’t. But just to give you an idea, here is what I designed:  A light blue T-shirt, with the following text and picture.

More Than A
Conqueror

CatAndMirror

I’m not trying to go on and on about it, but for me to get exactly what I wanted, it was really cool.  Yes, of course they have tons of items that you can buy, but they really ought to promote this part of their site a lot more.  To find that feature, just look on the left side bar for Design Your Own Christian Gifts, Clothing & More!

Click the banner below to get to Christian Gear And, please to feel free to leave a comment, especially if you decide to design something;  let us know what you did.

This weekend, here in the United States, we are celebrating our Independence Day.

John Adam and Thomas Jefferson were extremely influential in founding the United States.  Did you know that they both died on the same day; July 4, 1826, the 50th birthday of the United States.  Last year, on July 4th, on my membership site, I posted some information about of those men. If you’d like to see the article, Click Here.

Video

Bellow is a very special video in honor of Independence Day 2009, called, “In God We Trust.”  Below the video are some quotes by both Adams and Jefferson.

Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.
John Adams

All the perplexities, confusion and distress in America arise, not from defects in their Constitution or Confederation, not from want of honor or virtue, so much as from the downright ignorance of the nature of coin, credit and circulation.
John Adams

Abuse of words has been the great instrument of sophistry and chicanery, of party, faction, and division of society.
John Adams

A wise and frugal government, which shall leave men free to regulate their own pursuits of industry and improvement, and shall not take from the mouth of labor the bread it has earned – this is the sum of good government.
Thomas Jefferson

All tyranny needs to gain a foothold is for people of good conscience to remain silent.
Thomas Jefferson

I predict future happiness for Americans if they can prevent the government from wasting the labors of the people under the pretense of taking care of them.
Thomas Jefferson

americ-we-have-not-forgottenA Christian Nation?

By the way, there is a wonderful CD that came out in 2003 by the Goad family called,   America – We Have Not Forgotten
This is more than a patriotic CD.  It is full of the truth of the forming and foundation of the United States as a Christian nation.

You will hear the truth about “separation of Church and State.”  You will hear about a time when the United States Supreme Court ruled against someone who wanted to take Bibles out of schools.

You will hear some great quotes from our founding fathers as well as some quotes from some of our past presidents who were very clear in their belief in God and the Bible.

There are several songs, including a song dedicated to Veterans, called, “Veterans of the USA.” If you are a Veteran, you need to hear that song!

I own the CD.  I have listened to it a number of times.  I have even played it at Christian fellowships.  It is very inspiring.  If you’d like to get a copy, Click this link – it will take you to Amazon so you can get the best price.

Fish With Money In Its Mouth

[The Bible is an “Eastern” book.  It was written many years ago in the “East” which today we refer to as “The Middle East.”  As such, there are many customs and idioms that are not familiar to the “Western” mind.]

There is an interesting story in the gospel of Matthew in which Jesus sends Peter to catch a fish.  Jesus told Peter that there would be money in the fish’s mouth and that they would then use that money to pay the tribute tax.

Now some may wonder, especially if you like to go fishing, how could there be money in a fish’s mouth?  Many answer that question by saying that God, by way of a miracle, just put some money in that fish’s mouth.

Once again, understanding the eastern culture in which the Bible was written helps us to understand the story.

Musht Fish

musht_fishThere is a fish in the east called the Musht.  It is a small fish about six inches long with a large head.  It also has what you would call a bag, or a pouch under its mouth.

I have read that after new Musht hatch, the parents keep the new fish in the pouch for a short while to protect them.  Then when it is time, the parent fish will begin to pick up pebbles from the bottom of the sea and put them into the pouch.  This is done so the new fish will not be so comfortable – it’s time for them to leave home!

These Musht fish basically eat plankton, so at certain times of the year you can find them in very shallow water.  At times they do pick up shiny items.  Coins, gold or diamonds are shiny items.

How Do Coins Get In The Water?

In Bible times offerings to God were taken very seriously.  There were those who wanted to give an offering but did not want to receive any recognition for it.  Many believed that if you received praise from men then you had already received your reward now in this world.  They wanted to receive their reward in the next world.

So, in order to keep it private, many would throw their offerings into the waters.  Throwing their offerings into what were considered “holy waters” would be best.  But, depending on where one would be, any water would do.

3 Coins In A Fountaintrevifountain-2

Today there is a tradition of throwing coins into a fountain for “good luck.”  Perhaps the most famous is the Trevi Fountain in Rome.  When I saw it last year there were a lot of coins in there.  In fact, they say that approximately 3,000 Euros are thrown into that fountain each day.

Many believe this tradition of throwing coins into fountains goes way back to Biblical times when offerings were thrown into “holy waters.”  The Ganges River is considered a holy river.  Many years ago someone estimated there was more wealth, from years and years of offerings, in that river than in all India.

Peter Sent To Catch A Fish

In the Bible account that we are considering, Jesus told Peter to go to the sea, cast in a hook, and take the first fish that came up.  He went on to tell him that when he opened the fish’s mouth he would find a piece of money.

This must have been exciting for Peter.  He was a fisherman.  He knew it was possible for this type of fish to have a coin.  He also knew it was pretty rare to catch one that had a coin.  The Bible doesn’t say if he had ever caught one of these and found a coin before.

The Miracle

It was not a miracle that the fish had a coin.  The miracle was that it was the first fish that Peter caught.  Can you imagine him there all afternoon on the shore; casting in his hook, catching a fish, checking for a coin, and finding nothing?

But Peter didn’t argue. He didn’t doubt.  He believed what Jesus told him.

We too can have confidence in God’s promises.  We can accept that what God has promised us is true.  We don’t need to doubt, we just need to believe that He can and will supply all our needs.

Matthew 17:24-27
And when they were come to Capernaum, they that received tribute money came to Peter, and said, Doth not your master pay tribute?

He saith, Yes. And when he was come into the house, Jesus prevented him, saying, What thinkest thou, Simon? of whom do the kings of the earth take custom or tribute? of their own children, or of strangers?

Peter saith unto him, Of strangers. Jesus saith unto him, Then are the children free.

Notwithstanding, lest we should offend them, go thou to the sea, and cast an hook, and take up the fish that first cometh up; and when thou hast opened his mouth, thou shalt find a piece of money: that take, and give unto them for me and thee.

Feel free to leave a comment, even if it’s a fishing story of your own. I have a few of those and maybe you do too.  We’d love to hear what you have to say.

______________

There are a number of books that you can read to get insight on customs, manners, idioms and meanings from the eastern culture in which the Bible was written.  The best I know of were written by by Bishop K. C. Pillai.  I have had the pleasure of listening to recorded teaching by him.

He wrote three books, and they are hard to find, and are usually over priced.  But, if you want to you can check this link to see what Amazon has to offer.  Light Through an Eastern Window

Another great resource that I have used for years is a book called, “Manners and Customs of the Bible,” by James Freeman. Mine was printed in 1972 and I know they have newer additions. Christian Dating Service – Review

Christian Cafe

Over the years I have seen many people who want a lasting relationship struggle to meet other Christians. Sometimes after trying over a period of time they get discouraged.  I found a Christian dating service called, ChristianCafe.com

No, I’m not looking to date someone; my wife and I have been on a date for over 38 years now.  But I decided to review this service, compare it to other services, and then share what I found out with you.

I actually found comparisons with both eHarmony and BigChurch right on their site.  I was impressed with the differences.

I thought one of the best parts about ChristianCafe.com was not just their free trial, but the benefits you get from their free trial.  I’ll tell you about that in a minute, but first let me tell you what they say about themselves.

What They Say

The premier Christian singles site. A comfortable relaxing online Cafe where Christian singles connect with one other. Whether you’re looking for a companion, a date, or a soul mate, ChristianCafe.com is the place for you!

By comparison, ChristianCafe.com is a service only for Christian singles. These singles have faith as a priority in their life and are only seeking someone who shares their religious beliefs.

Profiles

ChristianCafe.com dating profiles are centered around a persons faith. For example, there is a short answer question, ‘Describe your Christian faith. Where are you at and what are your goals? What Scripture verses are important to you?’. Likewise, when searching for matches on ChristianCafe.com , one can select from the standard criteria, but also from items such as level of Christian faith, level of church involvement, and denomination. This type of focus is not available on a secular dating site like eHarmony.

The service eHarmony sends matches based on a personality survey filled out when joining the service; eHarmony members can only communicate with (and view the profiles of) those that are sent to them as matches.

You Have Full Control Over The Search

By comparison, ChristianCafe.com allows its members full control in searching for potential matches, providing over over 20 search criteria in helping them find their match. This way singles can search all profiles on ChristianCafe.com and decide themselves whether there could be a connection. members can contact these people right away as the service provides a free 10 day trial that includes the ability to communicate with other members.

Meet Christian Singles Now

ChristianCafe.com allows singles to get started right away. Christian singles can fill out a profile and start communicating with other Christian singles immediately – and free! (during the free trial period). eHarmony requires filling out an extensive personality profile which could take up to an hour, and then users must wait for new matches to be sent to them. Even then, users have to pay to even see photos of their matches, let alone being able to contact them.

I also found that there testimonials go back to January of 2002, so they have been helping people get together for over 7 years.

Free Trial

But I still think the best part is the free trial offer. The site says that with a free trial you can profile and browse thousands of profiles of other Christian singles. Their free trial includes a lot, including, posting a profile and communicating with other singles using email, winks or quick messaging.  The free trial includes access to send and read email; have full search capability; view full size photos; and view ‘Who’s Online’ and, communicate with them.

I think this is perhaps their best selling point.  Someone can try it for free and see all that they have to offer and use it and see if it is indeed the service they are looking for.

Check It Out Yourself

If this is a service that you have been looking for, then go to the site and check it out for yourself; just Click Here

If you do decide to use the service, please let us know about it; if you like it or not.  Come back to this post and type a comment below.

Internet Filtering – Review

Christian-Net  The Family Internet

Our first computer was in the living room, next to the dinning room table. Paula was in high school and Mike was 11.  It was 1995.

We had no Internet.  For email we used a very long telephone cord so that we could utilize Juno’s free email service.  The kids begged me to “get online.” Eventually we did get Internet service. By that time Paula was in college and Mike was in high school.

We all know that the computer is a very useful tool.  The Internet can give us access to information that can be helpful and beneficial, like this site for example!

But we also know that there is a lot of crap out there and it’s only a click away.  And lets face it, kids can get curious. At times friends can talk other friends in doing something that they shouldn’t.

Now there is Christian-Net

I found this service online.  They provide “Internet Filtering & Accountability.”  But in looking at all they have to offer, I discovered something that makes this service worth looking into.

It is designed for families.  The service lets you set up separate profiles for each family member.  I’ve never had any content filters or time restraints on my computer.  But the biggest complaint I have heard is that content filters can block sites that are not harmful, depending on the filtering level you pick.  But the problem is one level; one size fits all.

Christian-Net lets you have different levels for different family members and that can certainly put mom and dad at ease.

Some Of Their Features:

Multiple profiles for greater control.

Gone are the days of trying to cope with “One Size Fits All” filtering. Our filter can be customized to give each person in your family a completely different level of filtering, based on your preferences.

Detailed web usage reports.

Find out what your kids are viewing online, or send reports of your own access to an accountability partner. With Christian-Net it’s easy to send reports via email on a Daily, Weekly, or Monthly basis.

Time-based controls.

Want to restrict the time your kids can spend online? It’s easy with our new time controls!

Use on up-to 5 computers.

Does your family have more than one computer? You can use Christian-Net on up-to five computers without paying any additional license fees.

Application & protocol blocking.

Not only can you choose from over 20 categories to block, you can also block Internet-based applications and protocols, such as instant messengers, file sharing, VOIP, newsgroups, and chat.

If you’re looking for a product that can help you keep your family or small organization safe online, Christian-Net Home Edition is the solution for you. Our filter can be customized to not only block pornography, but any number of categories of undesirable content. It also features detailed web access reports that can be sent to the email address of your choice.

With our subscription-based pricing, your filter is always up-to-date, blocking most new pornographic web sites the day they come out. Your subscription to Christian-Net Home Edition also includes free product support via email and telephone. Additionally, you may install our software on up-to five computers at no additional charge.

I was surprised that the price is so low – $4.95.  And they do offer you a free 10 trial.

If you think this is something that might work for your household, and give you a little more peace of mind, go their site and check it out, and then get their free 10 day trial. To go to Christian-Net, Click Here.

If you do get this service, please come back to this post and leave a comment.  Tell us if you like it, how it’s working for your family, if you recommend it to others, etc.
